VII.

The central character in the Dead Poets Society movie, John Charles Keating is a charismatic,
vivacious English teacher who inspires people to come out of their shells and reach out towards their own
dreams and desires through the art of poetry, as well as demonstrating their liberty, freedom of speech,
and nonconformity. He is a staunch supporter of free thought, usually encouraging students to step
outside of their comfort zones and rebel against the restrictions they experience.

I find John Keating's teaching methods quite interesting and engaging. He is an example of a great
teacher who employs unconventional techniques to engage students who would otherwise tune out the
material and learn nothing. I think that schools need more teachers like him and administrators who are
child-centered rather than test-focused.

VIII. There are many ways in which the education at Welton differs from what I experienced in school.

➢ In the era depicted in the movie, teachers assumed a paternalistic authority over their students and
punished students physically for breaking school rules.
➢ The two major educational theories at Welton's Academy were liberalism and behaviorism, both
of which looked impervious to change and are depicted in the DPS movie.
➢ Mr. Keating unorthodox teaching methods would never be implemented in my kind of school or
any school for that matter. (as far as I know)

1. I think that at the end of the movie, Mr. Keating feels an immense sense of distraught at the loss
of his student as well as the loss of his job at the Welton academy.

2. The pupils might have been reluctant to help Mr. Keating because of fear that they would
get in trouble or face punishment from Mr. Nolan. Personally, I wouldn't have taken any
action if I had been one of them. Mr. Keating's rescue would not be important to me.

3. Given the dynamic Neil and his father displayed in the movie, I'm not sure how Neil
would have persisted with his acting career. I do think that Neill's father's opinion of him
as well as the feeling of being trapped pursuing something he didn’t desire played a
significant role in why he did what he did.

I don't think suicide is the best way to solve our problems, but having had periods in my
life where I thought about it, I'd say that frequently it can seem like the only option. I
believe that most individuals, especially older people, are quite insensitive and quick to
judge others for having those kinds of thoughts. The reality is that until someone has
personally experienced it, they can never really grasp its magnitude and how it feels.

Dear mom,

Regarding your health, I hope you are doing well. I'm fine too. Already one week has passed, and
everything has gone well thus far. Despite the size of the school, the residence halls are fairly modest.
There are a lot of pupils, and from what I keep hearing, this institution doesn't exactly have the finest
reputation. The name "Hellton" is frequently used here. I've heard that the teachers can be pretty frightful;
at the very least, many kids seem to be afraid of them, especially the headmaster, Mr. Nolan. We also
continue to hear the Welton principles being preached to us by the teachers and authorities. They are
excellence, discipline, tradition, and honor. But there is a sizable playground at the school. The science
lab is outstanding, and the computer lab is wonderful. While relaxing, we read newspapers and magazines,
play indoor games, and watch TV in the common area of the dormitory. I've already made a good number
of friends, including Charlie Dalton, a tremendously engaging saxophonist. I do feel compelled to
acknowledge our strange and unusual English teacher. He is by far the most unique of all of them.
Despite his bizarre behavior, I find him to be incredibly fascinating and humorous. As I find out more
about what else is going on, I'll keep you informed.

Love you,
Yours Truly,

Alex
