To deal with an upset condition,
operators must learn four skills:
• Fault detection—understanding
the normal values of process
parameter, their ranges and
associated alarm limits
• Fault diagnosis, through
learning the plant’s process
and control interactions
• Planning corrective actions to
address the problem identified
• Executing corrective actions
safely to restore the process
unit to normal operating
conditions.
For the first two skills, OTS will
not be the most appropriate
tool. These can be taught
effectively with interactive
question and answer tools to
familiarize trainees with fault
detection, and cause and
effect relationship training
modules to teach and illustrate
process interactions.
OTS is then used to test and
develop application of this
knowledge in planning and
executing appropriate control
responses.
