Group 3 Brainstorming Session

The area that interested me the most is social justice and how we apply that to the

organizations we are a part of. A specific topic regarding social justice that I am focusing on is

hiring those who are from diverse backgrounds and creating a work environment that is

inclusive and equitable. The issue my organization is concerned with is doing just that, creating

an environment where everyone, from any background, feels included and is given the same

opportunities that everyone else is. My organization helps this cause by providing our

employees with what matters most to them, charitable involvement, participating in volunteering

through the organization, providing scholarships to those who are from underrepresented

groups, and celebrating our differences. To involve other people and make them aware of the

intention to be equitable we continue to involve communities in our business practices and

recruiting efforts. My motto would be an inclusive, engaging place for us to be ourselves and put

meaning to our work, where we feel our work is rewarding and breaking barriers. My target

audience is anyone looking for a job, without exclusions and providing them all with the same

equal opportunity, to have a job where equity is top of mind. Often companies will target a

specific group of people and aim their efforts incorrectly. This is performative behavior, my

organization leads by example.

[REDACTED] had some great points surrounding her area of interest, health, and more

specifically, providing health services to the children in her organization. What stood out to me

about [REDACTED] ideas was her dedication to providing underprivileged families with health

services that they would otherwise be without. She also explained ideas for her organization to

be more involved in outreach efforts, involving themselves more with their community and

expanding their services to different areas around them. Her mission in getting young children

the healthcare they need is also associated with social justice as well, because of how political

people's access to healthcare is. We aligned in our pursuit for a more equitable, more just world

where everyone is given the same opportunity, not just for a job, but for their mental and

physical health.

[REDACTED] also had some great points surrounding her area of interest, social justice, and

more specifically the social justice in tailoring her organizations focus to student debt relief. She

also brought about the impact of student loan debt has on people after they graduate,

sometimes even before. Understanding that some people can’t afford to attend college so they

go right into the workforce. [REDACTED] aimed for her organization to help the cause by

reaching students before they embark on their college journey, teaching people in high school

or community colleges where they can find financial assistance and how to attend college

without a crippling amount of debt. [REDACTED] motto also stood out to me, that “the price tag

to higher education is not debt” accurately summing up what the burden of higher education is

like for most people, the fear of leaving college with a mortgage payment for debt.

The integrated idea my team decided to pursue for the final project is equity as a whole. We

found that our ideas all aligned in the sense that we want to be most just and fair for every

human. Our morals and organizational influence is aligned with equity, providing anyone and

everyone with the same opportunity, no matter who they are or where they come from. My hand

in my organization's culture of diversity, equity and inclusion, [REDACTED] hand in her

organizations providing children with mental health services, and [REDACTED] hand in her

organizations providing resources for students to avoid a mound of debt. These all had a

common theme we found to be equity. When we brainstormed we all came to the discussion

with different ideas on which direction we wanted to take the project, and reflected on the

meaningful work we do in our lives outside of this course. When we came to the realization that

we all thought equity was the most important, there were no arguments or doubts, it was a

eureka moment, a unanimous vote. We all seem to be aligned in our thinking, and in our

intention to lead with this thought process in our organization. The two key discussion points

that were made were to consider all aspects of a problem, how we can work towards providing

the same thing for everyone, and the issues that aren’t exclusive to an organization, but at a

global scale. How we as individuals can make small changes toward a more equitable future for

those who we are sought out to improve the lives of.
