Day 1/Time KEY CONCEPTS/DISCUSSION

An analogy is a figure of speech that creates


a comparison by showing how two seemingly
different entities are alike, along with illustrating a
larger point due to their commonalities. As a literary
device, the purpose of analogy is not just to make a
comparison, but to provide an explanation as well
with additional information or context. This makes
analogy a bit more complex than similar literary
devices such as metaphor and simile. Analogy is an
effective device in terms of providing a new or deeper
meaning about concepts through artistic use of
language.

Here are some tips to help us distinguish


between these three figures of speech:

1. A simile is a comparison of unlike objects


that has something in common using the
expressions: as, like and resembles. For example,
“He is as tall as the coconut tree” The two unlike
objects/persons have something in common when it
comes to their height.

2. A metaphor is an implied/direct
comparison of two unlike objects having a common
attribute. For example, “Life is a wheel.” Life may
experience ups and downs which is similar to a
wheel which is moving forward and backward in its
circular motion.

3. An analogy compares two things that are


technically unrelated with common similarity that
needs strong support or explanation for better
understanding. For example, “Raising children is
like gardening—nurture them and be patient.”
This example compares the pattern that is similar in
both raising children and gardening. Both need
special love, care and attention.

but a stepping- stone of the strong.
a. It is an implied comparison between a granite
and a weak/strong person. It is a hindrance
for the weak and a challenge for the strong
ones.

strong.
c. A granite is a precious gem to be treasured.
d. A granite symbolizes for a struggle between
the weak and the strong.

5. Memory is to love what the saucer is to cup.


a. Memory holds on to love, as a saucer holds
the cup.
b. The comparison has a similar purpose.
c. Memory prevails like a cup and saucer.
d. There’s an implied relationship between a
pair of memory: love and cup: saucer.
