Day: ______ KEY CONCEPTS
Date: _____
Time: _____ Linear text is the most common type of text that needs to
be read from beginning to end. It focuses on the arrangement of the
words, both grammatically and stylistically. Generally, texts printed
on paper are considered as linear texts. Novels, poems, short
stories, letters, educational texts, all those texts we read from the
beginning to the end, are linear texts.

Nonlinear text is non-sequential text. It suggests that the

readers do not have to go through the text in an orderly manner to
make sense of the text. This type of text has many reading paths
since it’s the reader who decides the sequence of reading, not the
author of the text. Charts, data tables, concept maps, diagrams,
graphs, photographs and digital texts with hyperlinks are
considered non-linear texts.

How to Transcode Information from Linear to Non- Linear Text

1. Read the text and get its main idea.

2. Get necessary information for the visual
representation.
3. Remember to use keywords or phrases only.
4. Classify information into categories.
5. Make sure to use the correct non-linear text to present

Success comes with hard work. To succeed you must have

the desire and the determination. Not all people will be successful
in life, but success can be achieved. Here are some tips to
succeed.

First, you must believe in yourself and your ability to
succeed. Without believing in yourself you have already lost the
race. In everything you do you should exude a high level of self-
confidence.

Work hard and be very disciplined. Success does not come

overnight; you must work hard for it and be disciplined. Without
these two, it is almost impossible for you to be successful. It won't
be easy, but it can be done. As the famous quote goes, "Heights of
great men reached and kept were never attained by sudden flight,
but they, while their companions slept, kept toiling onward
through the night."

Balance your life. It is important to remember that even as

you work hard you should take some time to have fun. There is
time for everything; set a time to have fun and never neglect your
family and friends. It is also important to remember that you
should get the work done first, and then have fun.

Have good manners. An individual should always show

respect to other people and distinguish oneself as a lady or
gentleman. As a famous Jamaican proverb goes, "Manners carry
you through the world and back without a penny."

Take time to educate yourself and become qualified. Never

assume that you learn as much on the job. In this global economy,
those wishing to succeed must have the necessary tools to be
successful, and that includes having an education.

Do not let the past define who you are; you define who
you are. No matter what your background is, you can break
through any barriers if you just follow these steps.

Never forget where you're coming from. Many people, after

achieving some success, won’t remember anymore where they
come from. This is a sure recipe for failure in the future as the
same ones you talk badly about now can be the ones who rescue
you in the long run.
