On the day of March 7, 1867 was Tomas A. Remigio born in Sampaloc, Manila.
Remigio’s early teacher was his father, from whom he learned to read and write.
He was awarded “model employee” while working at the Bureau of Public
Works and Finance also served as secretary of the Manila City Government,
commissioner of deeds and captain of the Philippine Army.

Tomas A. Remigio was one of the finest playwright his best known work was
“Malaya” considered one of the finest nationalist play written during American
Period

He helped in the dissemination of propaganda works of Jose Rizal, Marcelo H.


Del Pilar, and Graciano Lopez Jaena. Through his works, he became the
secretary of Mayon, a branch of La Liga Filipina was a civic organization
established by Jose Rizal in 1892 while the Philippines was under Spanish colonel
rule. Its aims were to unite the country, to protect and assist all its member, to
fight violence and injustice, to support education and to study and implement
reforms

Remigio’s recruited to be part of Katipunan during Spanish Period hence in 1896,


an organization with the vision of completely separating the Philippines from
Spain after declaring the independence of the country. As a member, he
helped in administering oaths to new recruits at the house of Andres Bonifacio.
He became the adviser of Bonifacio, but they had a misunderstanding because
he was not favor of armed struggles. He went on to form a society called “Binhi
ng Payapa”

On September 21, 1896 when the Philippines revolution broke out, he was
arrested and sent to prison in Spain while in prison he was tortured for refusing to
reveal the whereabouts of the revolutionary funds. He was exiled for 20 years in
Barcelona and Cartagena, Spain. He was given an early release by the
Spaniard and returned to Manila, Philippines in 1899

Upon his return to the country, he wrote for the newspaper Kapatid ng Bayan
and wrote several anti-American plays, including Mga Santong Tao, Luha ng
Ina, and Malaya recognized as his best known work, which was awarded the
Golden Pen

He died on August 1, 1916 at the age of 49.
