Upgrading SEP Clients

NOTE: this procedure can be used with upgrade or new client installation. It is recommended to
update virus definition at SEP Manager first as per section “Updating the Virus definition files”.

1. Login to Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager.

2. Go to “Admin” and click “Install Packages”. Click “Client Install Package”.

3. Right click on Windows 64-bit platform line and select “Export”.

 4. It is recommended to create a folder “C:\SEP Client Install Package”. Select the folder
under Export folder.

Select installation features and settings as “Default Standard-Size Install Setting” and
security feature as “maxDNA - Basic Protection”.

Set Policy mode as “Computer Mode”.

Under Export Settings select “Export a managed client”. Also select “maxDNA Clients” for
export packages. Also select “Add clients automatically to the selected group. Existing
clients will remain in their current group”.

Click “OK”.

 5. “Exporting Package…” window with progress bar will appear.

6. It may take up to 30 min for the “Exporting Package…” procedure to complete.

7. Copy the setup package to the client by using a removable media. Install it running
Setup.exe. This is to be repeated at every client including the security server running
SEPM.

Note that it is also possible to upgrade clients automatically. On the SEPM main window select
“Clients” and then click “Install Packages” tab. Client packages can be added with “Add a Client
Install Package”. The packages added will be distributed automatically to the clients as per
“Upgrade Schedule” / “Distribute upgrade over:” setup. This is recommended only if plant is in a
shutdown condition. Moreover setting 0 to “Distribute upgrade over:” will result in sending
installation package to clients right away. It may cause extra heavy network traffic load on the
maxNET depending on the number of clients. Hence it is recommended to use the above manual
client upgrade procedure only.
