CHAPTER TWO
3. INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

2.1 How I get in to the company?

As a student , he tried to find a better company for my internship program, so first he tried to gather
information about different Architectural offices according to their levels, amount of services that they
give back to the society, work quality… from senior architects and students, depending on the
information he listed on different company’s accordingly, among those lists this firm was one of the top
five selections of his that fulfills his requirements.
He went to the firm and submit his portfolio, After viewing his portfolio the owner and general manger
professional practicing architect told him to start the day after. on 19_07_2010e.c

2.2 working section on the company

In the last six month that he have been at the firm he have worked on different position (as drafts man,
boy..) of the company, but mostly he had been assigned on designing architectural designs, as its is his
profession.

he have been assigned on both on site and in the office witch helped him to upgrade his theoretical and
practical skill . Whenever he got involved in a project he have devoted his self fully to the project witch
helped him to produce an interesting output, increase his skills and expand his perspective. In the office
he have been working on residential buildings, hotels, land escapes etc…. For all of this listed types he
have been providing both hand & computer generated drawings (illustration) such as architectural
drawings, as-built drawings, schedules, 3D CAD modeling, 3D visualization, presentation panels &
illustrations.

Eventually there are some tasks that he didn’t got involved, he have a little insight and working
knowledge about what goes on the field. By any chance there was no even a slight possibility to meet
with a client witch would had enables the intern to build a confidence and communication skill too.

10
2.3 During Internship
The success of qualified Internship System depends on largely how well the student understands
and fulfills his or her responsibilities in the firm. The university have not given any detailed orientation
about the coming internship, how it is going to be, possible challenges and problems interns could face ,
and how interns should deal with them. Despite this barriers he succeed.
he started his internship at Assefa Gebeyehu consulting architects and engineers firm due Monday 13th
March. The secretary brief him with the regular working hours and to notify the firm in advance when the
intern fail to report for work at the regular working time.
Assefa Gebeyehu consulting architects and engineers daily working schedule is shown in table 2.1.

Table 2.1 Assefa Gebeyohu consulting architects Working Schedules

2.4 How does the work flow in the section look like.
As he tried to discus in the above section that there are two organizational system which is designing
/main work of the company/ and other supporting functions supervision and consulting.
Those two systems of the company can work in coordinated way among each other. In designing process
the way they work is depending on the building to be design for, for example if the designed project is
small like residential building, mixed use building, Gust house building etc. the design flow is simply
started from agreement between the owner of the building and the manager of the company then the
manager give an order to the architects to prepare the architectural designs after that the architect give the
drawings to other engineers for other engineering designs then the over all designing process is finalized
by the drafting experts. But if the project designed is bigger then all members of the firm are working
together starting from the architectural drawing by discussing one another up to the completion the
drawings and model work etc….
In general the overall work flow of the company depends on the type of work came to the office .but it
can have its own system of working flow adopted by the company workers.

2.5 Which work price or work task I have been executing.

Work tasks that the intern have been exciting in his time in the firm are listed under in a table format.
Starting from the first week first project to the last one keeping the chronicle time sequence. After the

2.9 Procedures he have been using while performing the work task
studding architecture in campus and practicing it in architectural firm are two different things.
specially in Ethiopian context the difference is visible, on school students can focus on the
architectural design, function, space, form, structure and the overall appearance of the building.
Beside that the designer have full freedom on the project. But one employed architect working on a
firm does not have enough space to practice his profession. Due to clients desire, EBSC (which varies
time to time), budget etc…
The intern have tried to compensate the theoretical part with the real world task by fusing both. in
order to do achieve these task the intern referred books, websites, rule and regulations and consulting
with fellow interns and colleges and supervisor.

2.9.1 Strength or the company

 Clients are highly drawn to the firm witch means more projects.
 Supervision of constriction site.

2.9.2 Weakness of the company

 Punctuality of projects .
 Manger employees' disagreements
 Freedom of creativity

2.10 How good he have been facing while performing his work
tasks.
the intern have been assigned to work on many projects and in each projects he had done what
expected of him in the given time interval. Working on the projects the intern gather data about the
project from different sources after understanding he goes right to the design part, in this part he
consults with his mentor, interns and general manager. This process helped to perform well on the
tasks that he have been assigned on.

42
2.11 What procedures he have been using while performing his work
tasks?
At the time the intern begins working at the firm he where not aware of how things done in the firm as well
as with the procedure also. And it was hard to ignore some essential theoretical parts and design parts witch
give him a hard time to cop up. There are many rule and regulation to follow , clients desire, supervisors
desires, time tables, and others. After couple of weeks he become familiar and cope up with the procedures
and the rules of conducts of the firm. As the weeks pass the projects he involved on grew so as his
confidence and his perspective on the field.

The procedures he have been using during performing his tasks did varied from time to time and project to
project. Cause all projects varies from type to scale, due this reason he have to follow different procedures
so there was no static procedure he follow. Despite that there is some common procedure he follow at most
of the projects at first he gathers data on the projects by starting with asking detail questions about the client
needs, site, location, then he starts designing, he consult his design with the supervisor and mentor , then I
write some mistakes and add futures then he consult again and again till the supervisor and the client are
satisfied. After that the design will go to city governance for permission if they give the go the design will
go to construction if not he will write the mistakes and send it to city again till its approved.

2.12 Measures he have taken in order to overcome these challenges

In order to over come the challenges he took different measures like referring data's online, on books,
asking orally … but the most influential measure he took was to consult with his fellow colleges and
mentor.

CHAPTER THREE
3. Benefits I gained from the internship

3.1 What I gained in terms of improving my practical skills

Working on this firm helped him to improve practical skills on software's, design, communication
skill, management and on many different things .
First handedly what he gained from the firm is exposure to the rile world witch is different in many
ways from campus and challenging. Second there is certain rules or customs that he should follow.
School projects can focus only on the appearance function of architectural design but in the real world
designing process is much more different because in Ethiopian context most designs have regular
shapes and forms due to smallness of site given, rules and regulations can shape the forms of the
building.
He also tried to compare drawing on built up sites and how importance of coordination of different
engineering fields. Generally during his working time he tried to compare the knowledge gained from
school and from the office works and improving his designing systems by fusing them to yield one
grate product. And improving on different software's example on AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop and
other supportive software's.

3.1.1 Practical skill

This internship program helped him through the translation of formal education to architectural practice.
There a say that says architects shapes the built up world and as an intern he was able to live the say and put
his own building witch is great by it self. put or shape some how afield gave him a chance to put his creative
footprint on a building, town and sometimes in a city level. This by itself is a practical break through to start
his carrier in the future.
Working with experienced staff members helped him both in design and the experimental skills. It was a kind
of firm that encourages him to use all the needed resources in the firm and get him to practice in new soft
wares and use his campus experience in areal design studio.
Working with his mentor and with graduate architect, and having a practical site visit by itself is a great
practical experience.

3.2 What he gained in terms of upgrading his theoretical knowledge.

Most theory of architecture is applying on the office works but us I try to discuss in the above there
is a difference between school and real world designing process. In terms of up grading my
theoretical knowledge. I process a lot on the internship time to train my self by referring different
books.
Working integrally with employer of the company Visiting site works and comparing the office
work with site and both of them with school theoretical educations.

44
3.2 What I gained in terms of improving his interpersonal
communication skills.

Regarding interpersonal communication skill he did have some improvements witch grew time to time
as he works more and more with his colleges, and witch enables him to facilitate and enjoy his work in
the firm. Roughly the interpersonal communication skill he gained are:
 Performing well in and with a group.
 Oral presentation quality.
 How to work with and understand a client well.
 Helping each other on software rendering of 3D views. AutoCAD works etc.
 Generally he developed his communication skill in many aspects during his work in the firm.

3.3 What he gain in terms of improving his team playing skills.

Designing is not numerical value witch you calculate and find a solution, it takes time even to come
with an idea and to transfer an idea to something people observe is a hard task by it self. So one should
do researches on the project that he works on. So when he did researches on a project that he was
assigned on while researching his knowledge grows at that area too , witch helped him and the team to
operate well.

Most of the times there where projects given in groups, witch was interesting because when project is
given in group its big, witch means more desiccation, debates, consultation, researches. Witch overall
plays a great roll in improving his team playing skill.

Working in a group in a firm is great because people who works with him comes from different place,
time, universities and having different experience. Witch makes it very fascinating because almost all of
them views things in different angles, operate in different ways, have there own designing philosophy
witch means they have there own ways of understanding things.

Working in These kind of environment makes him comfortable, open, transparent and enables him to
learn compensation. lessening to different ideas, viewing different works and skills tells you what you
are messing and where you are in your profession. So you tray to do your best to cope up, gain what you
lack , witch makes you eager for more and upgrade your self. in the process you learn a great deal of
wisdom and gate you to the next level.

What I gained in team roles are

• higher level of inspiration
• Knowledge on different part of the profession and others
• Confidence
• Communication skill….

45
3.4 What he gain in terms of improving his leadership skills.
Architects are the main leader on the designing process. All other are supervised by architects. Because
other drawings like electrical, sanitary, structural designs are raised from the architectural designs. so interns
improve there leadership skill. He tried to develop his leadership through discussing directly with colleges
on different works of the office

3.5 what he gain in terms of understanding about work ethics related

issues.
 Fulfill needs of client.
 Respect time for agreement to finalize.
 Responsible in work task.
 Working rules and regulations.
 Familiarize working situation.
 punctuality.
 Trough time he developed good working habit, he started working on the weekends and holydays.
 No rooms for mistakes and negligence.
 He have increased his level of concentration and focus during work time.
 The work ethics in the office is a bit tighter witch directly influenced the way he operates.

3.6 What he gain in terms of entrepreneurships skills.

Entrepreneurship skills usually develop by seeing what others do and by learning the ways and
techniques how others handle the business. His hope for future has increased since he get the line of his
profession. His doubts are cleared and he have shaped him self. Before the internship, most of his future
life was blurry. He will increase his potential by discussing with other students who were in different
atmospheres and with those who have a long life experience in architecture. This enabled him to figure
out his future well .

 upgraded his theoretical knowledge due to different kinds of the project.

 Know how of the different between real life and theory.
 Ability to bee patient and full of confidence.
 Developing team work spirit.
 Developing endurance during work load or job pressure.
 Procedures and disciplines of team work.
 Understanding the benefits of team work.

46
3.7 Architectural Career
Earning a professional degree in architecture is typically the first step to becoming an architect. Aside that it
is must to have internship experience; which is likely an introductory to future professional work in the
field.

CHAPTER FORE
4. EXIT
4.1 Conclusion
On the duration of last six months of internship practicing time, from the filed Architecture he tried
to understand and compare different methods of applying those theory which he gain from
educational background and an education gather from working in Assefa Gebeyehu consulting
Architects and Engineers firm.
The overall conclusion about internship is that changes our attitude, our knowledge, our experience
and future plan. It is a basic moment for every student whether he proceeds on his profession or not.

 Internship is an opportunity that enhances your knowledge of Theoretical & Practical skills.
 Team work playing skills.
 Leader ship skills.
 Understanding work ethics issues.
 Entrepreneurship skills.

Internship is a turning point for every student who effectively participated/ work on it.
There is paradigm change after the internship period . For instance I started to:

 limit his unrealistic and fantasized expectations towards the world out of school.
 Notice the purpose of the courses we have been taking.
 The role of our profession or the role of architects.
 Think about the future and he set out his goals, plans and visions.

understanding the filed of Architecture can help me for feather working process in my life time, but
with in this few months of practicing time he sow the working flow of different Architectural
consulting offices both as a positive an d negative way.

48
4.2 Recommendation for company

4.2.1 strength
 There are lot of good sides starting with the manger, he have been practicing this profession for over
24 years witch is good and he have also a good reputation on the market so his firm is preferable.
witch attracts more projects to his firm.
 The firm office is small under around 60m2 witch lead the employees to work beside each other that
lead to build good sprit between workers. Now the bond between the employees is strong. Making
the firm environment joyful and making it look like home.
 The employees in the firm are young , easy to communicate with, full of dermis and full of great sprit
witch makes theme more joyful and fun to work with.
 Enhance the competitiveness of workers.

4.2.2 weakness
 The down side is that the manger don’t go well with his employees witch leads him to lose numerous
architects with good potential and skills.
 Because of the upper reason there is less efficient architect in the firm.
 There is not any eye catching about the interior of the firm.
 The desktops are old and its impossible to work on them.
 Mostly Cultural elements are not reflected in the designs.
 Pure modern architecture is not appreciated in the firm.
 Clients do not give space to designers, making it hard to produce great outputs.

49
4.2.3 For Coming Interns

 Intensively participate on internship program for the seek of their benefit.

 To share their experience to their juniors.
 Beside their achievement interns have great responsibility for the next interns, so they should work
hard and keep good name of the Bahir Dar University architecture department.
 One of the good incentives in Assefa Gebeyehu Consultant Architects and Engineers is good
internet access, so interns should take advantage of this and use it properly.
 I recommend highly to work hard, and do not hesitate to ask any question because they are at the
firm to learn. And the lessons they get during the internship is weigh more than school.

4.2.4 IN general
Architecture by its nature its art and science. But in the current time it is only about money witch is
killing the profession nation wide. And there is nothing don to write these wrong by any body witches
makes it even worse.

Architecture as profession is not weal known in Ethiopia witch makes me sad because there was a point
the country and the profession was at there picks Lalibela, Axum… and now most of Ethiopians don’t
know the profession. It is possible to say the profession did not exist in Ethiopia interims of satisfying
job done regarding the built up environment.

The profession stands or works for groups of wealthy peoples, what about vast majority of the society,
who else is there for them?

The field is given in different campuses in the current time at great quantity , witch is good but what
about the quality ?

Most designs that are coming recently follow Europeans philosophy, standards, designs . What our
about our culture , philosophy, standards …?
