Problem Set
(Sampling Distribution, Estimation of Parameters, Hypothesis Testing)

1. The population mean time it takes to empty a bottle of liquid is 80 minutes with a standard deviation of 6 min. A sample
of 60 bottles is taken. What is the probability that:
a) the sample mean is at most 78 min?
b) the sample mean is at least 81 min?
c) the sample mean is between 77 min and 83 min?

2. Suppose that a sample size of 100 is taken from a population with a mean of 500 and a standard deviation of 80.
a) Find the probability that the sample mean lies in the interval, 490 and 510.
b) Find the range of values within where the middle 95% of the distribution of sample means will lie.

3. Suppose that SHS faculty members (with a master teacher rank) in the Philippines earn an average of 720,000 php per year
with a standard deviation of 10,000. In an attempt to verify these given, a random sample of 60 master teachers were selected
from a database for all master teachers in the country. Calculate the probability that the sample mean is not less than 710,000
php per year.

4. Write the confidence interval for 𝜇 given the following values.

a) 𝜎= 24, n = 100, confidence level = 80.30%
b) 𝜎= 143, n = 35, confidence level = 78.13%

5. The mean price of 25 smart phones is P19500 with a sample standard deviation of P950. Find the 98% confidence interval
of the true mean price of smart phones.

6. The average time of 12 athletes from the Visayas team in finishing a 100-meter sprint is 98 seconds with a standard
deviation of 1.5 seconds. Find the 99% confidence interval for the mean time of Visayas Team athletes for them to finish a
100-meter sprint.

7. The average amount of purchase of goods of 100 people in MAX convenience store is P125. Find the 95% confidence
interval for the average purchase in this store if it is known that the population standard deviation is about P50.

8. A soda company distributes diet cola in bottles labeled 32 oz. The Department of Trade and Industry randomly selects 50
of these bottles, measures the contents, and obtains a mean of 31.0 oz. Assuming that the 𝜎 is 0.75 oz., is it valid at 0.01
significance level to conclude that the soda company is cheating on its consumers? Answer using 4 essential steps.

9. In building electronic circuitry, the breakdown voltage of diodes is an important quality characteristic. The breakdown
voltage of 12 diodes was recorded as follows: 9.09, 9.17, 9.32, 9.37, 8.47, 9.57, 9.51, 8.92, 9.91, 8.80, 8.92, 8.30. Test the claim
that the mean breakdown voltage is more than 9 volts with a significance level of 0.05. Answer using 4 essential steps.

10. A medical investigation claims that the average number of infections per week at a hospital in Manila is 16.3. A random
sample of 10 weeks had a mean number of 17.7 infections. The sample standard deviation is 1.8. Is there enough evidence
to reject the investigator’s claim at ⍺ = 0.05? Answer using 4 essential steps.
