)Failing to use scientific names;Common names for plants are part of our everyday language but are

open to alternative interpretations.

2)Misspelling scientific names:When describing the effects of the herbal drug Catuama on isolated
rabbit heart, the authors refer to one of the ingredients as ‘Zinziber officinalis’, which is a misspelling for
the genus name Zingiber [7].

3)Incorrect author names;Researchers are often unaware that the author of a scientific plant name is an
integral part of that name and necessary to avoid ambiguity.

4)Being unaware of synonymy

;Using correctly spelled scientific names within an article is necessary for, but not sufficient to ensure its
scientific integrity.

a) Failing to use taxonomic references appropriately.

Authors need to be aware , however, that these references sources vary I their purpose ,scope and their
degree of currency or maintenance and as a result even those with similar goals can give conflicting
options.

b)Being aware of synonymy

There are more than one million formally published names for different species. Thus each plant has
multiple names which causes difficulty to authors.

c) Missing or Incorrect author names

Author of a scientific plant name is an integral part of that name and necessary to avoid ambiguity

d) Misspelling scientific names

In papers where there are several misspellings some editors or readers may be tempted to question the
overall merit of the paper as a result of small errors.

e) Failing to use scientific Names.

A common name can mean different things to different people and their use can change
overtime.Pharmaceutucal names can refer to more than on species within a single monograph and the
same name can be used in different pharmacopoeia to refer to substances derived from different plant
species.

The following are flaws identified in the history of plant taxonomy :-

i)Failing to use scientific names. The use of scientific names is not straight forward and poses a number
of problems for researcher which will now be outlined.

ii) Misspelling scientific names. When describing the effects of herbal Cutuama on isolated rabbit heart,
authors refer to one of the ingredients as Zinsiber officinalis which is a misspelling for the genus name
Zingiber.

iii) Missing or incorrect author names. Researchers are often unaware that the author of a scientific
plant name is an integral part of the name and necessary to avoid ambiguity. Failing to cite an author of
scientific name is that research results may be attributed to wrong species error.

iv) Being unaware of synonymy. There are more than one million formally published scientific names for
between 350000 and 400000 plant species thus each plant has synonymy. Being unaware that two
scientific names are synonyms for the same plant will result to the following : (a)
Your research is not a novel.

(b) You publish contradictory information.

(c) Using older names or an out of date taxonomy.

v) Failing to use taxonomic references. Multiple botanical references exist online and in print to help the
researcher to check plant names. However these reference sources vary in their purpose which m
