Course Title: General Botany

Laboratory Exercises No. 14: Vascular Seed Plants: Angiosperm
Lesson: What are the characteristics of angiosperm?

Introduction
In the plant kingdom, the division Spermatophyta is divided into gymnosperms
and angiosperms. The most diverse and dominant group of plants among the two are
angiosperms, also referred to as magnoliophyta. In common terms, angiosperms are all
flowering plants. They are distinguished from gymnosperms, by their ability to flower
and produce seeds enclosed in fruits.
Flowering plants dominate the earth's vegetation. Hardwood forests and
woodlands, shrub lands, grasslands, wetlands, deserts, cold high-elevation tundra’s,
and warm low-elevation rain forests have a biomass (weight of organic matter)
composed chiefly of flowering plants. Nearly the earth’s entire crop plants, orchard
trees, garden plants, and ornamentals are flower plants. Coffee, tea, and cocoa
beverages are made from flowering plants; cotton and linen are fabrics made from
flowering plants. Many pharmaceuticals--from aspirin to morphine--come from metabolic
chemicals in flowering plants or are patterned after these chemicals.
Angiosperm is a synonym for flowering plant. It means "seed within a vessel" or
"enclosed seed." The defining angiosperm feature is the enclosure of the ovules within
surrounding tissue called an ovary. The ovary is part of a flower, a structure that occurs
only in angiosperms. The ovary, and sometimes-associated tissues, eventually forms a
fruit, another unique angiosperm structure.

Learning outcomes:
At the end of this exercise the student should be able to:

1. Describe the general features of angiosperm

2. Understand the life cycle of angiosperm
3. Identify angiosperms and explain how they reproduce.
4. Describe the three life patterns of angiosperms.

Materials

It is difficult to collect different flowering plants because of the pandemic

situation. However, the laboratory materials for the identification of Angiosperm or the
flowering plants is from the “Bahay Kubo” lyrics song.

In this exercise, you are going to review the different plants from the “Bahay
Kubo” lyrics song. Classification and identfication of flowering plants. You will also be
determining how to distinguish between monocot and dicot.

1. The following links will give you some information about the parts of the
angiosperm. Diligently view some of the video clips and slides and take notes
of some important facts about the parts of the plants. Tabulate your
observation on your worksheet (Table 1).

Classification and Identification of Flowering Plants

I. Write your introduction (This includes principles, significance of the study,

objectives of the experiment and the passive voice and past tense.
Introduction must be short but packed with relevant content).

II. Procedure:
You will work alone in this activity and review the lyrics of “Bahay
Kubo” lyrics song. This activity is part of the survey classification of flowering
plants.

1. Bahay Kubo lyrics

2. Common name of plants translate to English name
3. Classify the list of plants (Kingdom, Phylum, Division, Class, Order,
Family, Genus, Species)
4. The levels from highest to lowest classification are as follows:
a. Kingdom
b. Phylum
c. Division
d. Class
e. Order
f. Family
g. Genus
h. Species
5. Using this system, the onion, for example, would be identified as
follows:
a. Kingdom – Plantae
b. Phylum - Tracheophyta
c. Division – Magnoliophyta
d. Class – Liliopsida

e. Order – Asparagales
f. Family - Amaryllidaceae
g. Genus - Allium
h. Species – cepa
i. Scientific name: Allium cepa L.

Note: The binomial name consists of a genus name and specific

epithet. The scientific names of species are italicized. The genus
name is always capitalized and is written first; the specific epithet
follows the genus name and is not capitalized. There is no exception to
this.

6. The list of representative of the plants commonly found in “Bahay

Kubo” lyrics song. Clue – there are 18 type of plants. You will be
responsible for identifying all of them and fill up the Table 1.

7. Second, the classification of angiosperms

Division Angiospermae contains two main classes: Class Monocotyledons

and Class Dicotyledons. These two classes can be distinguished in a number of
ways, including: seed, leaves, flowers, roots, and stem vascular tissue. Below is
a list of 15 families under dicotyledons and 5 families’ monocotyledons. Be sure
to see the textbook, as well as other resources form the Google, where
classification of plants and taxonomy will be found. You’ll be expected to
recognize members of this family without the aid of a key.
