EARLY LIFE

July 6, 1851 – she entered the nursing
program in a hospital that Pastor Theodor
Fieldner opened in Kainserwerth,
Germany
-she was the 134th nursing student to
attend Fieldner School of Nursing
1853 - Nightingale went back to
London and became a
reformer for charities
-Became the Superintendent of the
Hospital for the Gentile Women (an
institution that took care of women who
used to be affluent, like hospice care)
CRIMEAN WAR
 started October of 1853
 French and British versus Russia
 Sidney Herbert, the Secretary of
War, sent Nightingale a letter
asking her to assemble a team of
nurses to tend to the soldiers
 Nightingale gathered 34 nurses in
standards (young, middle class,
had a basic education)
 Through statistics, Nightingale
found out that the mortality rate
was 42.7% (most of the soldiers
died from infection and not from
battle wounds)
 After sanitation and sterilization of
environment, improving the diets of
the soldiers, the mortality rate went
down to 2.2% in 6 months
1860 – published the Notes of Nursing
(which influenced the Adaptation Theory,
Need Theory, Stress Theory)
