Procedure for Trial Assessment Utilizing Hybrid Acoustic Technology on Tank

1.0 INTRODUCTION

CLIENT has invited MRA Internatinal Sdn.Bhd. (MRA) to perform Trial Project to evaluate and
determine the capability of Hybrid Acoustic Technology (HAT) in providing feasible results for tank
inspection. This procedure shall provide a framework for an evaluation which shall benchmark the
result of the HAT against another advance or conventional method, results of which has been verified
or accepted by CLIENT. The procedure shall be agreed in advance by CLIENT and MRA and the
evaluation process shall be undertaken jointly by both party.

Principally, HAT is an acoustic measurement type of inspection method that evaluates energy
released by deforming defects. HAT can identify active defects and further analyze the signals to
provide valuable information to the client i.e. defect location, defect orientation, defect length, defect
width and defect depth, information which is sufficient to conduct Fitness for Service (FFS)
assessment to determine the integrity of the asset.

HAT provides real-time data on inspected pipeline irrespective of its state of usage. It is suitable to
be applied to assets that are in operation where various damage mechanisms are present and
naturally occurring. In other words, HAT’s capability is focused to detection of active defects that are
formed and increase in natural operating environment

2.0 OBJECTIVE

The objective of this procedure is to provide a guide for the evaluation of Hybrid Acoustic Technology
technique in order to establish compliance with the performance specification (refer Tolerance
Table). Prior to job execution, MRA should be provided with all related data (detail drawings, previous
inspection report, previous repair and maintenance report) of the tank. In order to have an optimum
diagnostic result, the tank should be in its normal operating parameter.

3.0 SCOPE OF WORK

3.1 General

The scope of work shall describe the general process flow to be adopted for the trial
exercise of Hybrid Acoustic Technology and verification method and criteria for validation
of the technology. These shall be agreed by CLIENT and MRA prior to project
commencement. The general process flow for HATS monitoring and standard operating
procedure is shown in Figure 1.

All these testing will be conducted at only accessible areas. Failure or inability to follow the process
flow described above will lead to inaccuracy and discrepancies to the HAT findings.

3.2 Inspection Coverage

Performed diagnostic provides 100% coverage of the tank in real operating conditions
without intervention to the technological process, opening, stopping and changes to the
objects operating modes. HAT primary capability is to determine the:

 Depth of anomaly/defect,
 Length of anomaly/defect,
 Width of anomaly/defect,
 Orientation of anomaly/defect,
 Surface Location of anomaly/defect (Internal/External),
 Location of anomaly/defect from known reference point, and
 Type of anomaly/defect

The reported anomaly/defect shall be within the tolerance provided in Table 1 & 2.

Table 1: Tolerance Table for HATS Performance (Up to 50-meter diameter)

Description Dimension Accuracy

Size of Anomaly/Defect, length and width +/- 100 mm

Depth of Anomaly/Defect +/- 20%

Location of Anomaly/Defect +/- 1000 mm

Circumferential Positioning of Anomaly/Defect +/- 15

Table 2: Tolerance Table for HATS Performance (More than to 50-meter diameter)
Description Dimension Accuracy

Size of Anomaly/Defect, length and width +/- 100 mm

Depth of Anomaly/Defect +/- 20%

Location of Anomaly/Defect +/- 2000 mm

Circumferential Positioning of Anomaly/Defect +/- 15

3.3 Assessment

Anomaly/defect assessment shall be made using the criteria in section 3.2. Initial
assessment shall be undertaken using reported data. Appendix 1 provides an assessment
table which shall be completed by CLIENT and MRA for ease of individual anomaly/defect
evaluation.

Anomalies/defects that fail to meet the assessment criteria as provided in section 3.2 shall
be subjected to an on-site inspection by MRA. The results of the MRA inspection shall be
independently confirmed by CLIENT. Each party shall provide their own inspection team
and equipment. All inspection personnel shall demonstrate competency via CV and
appropriate certification.

3.4 Anomaly/Defect Verification

The inspection of anomalies that fail to meet the criteria specified in Table 1 & 2 shall be
conform to agreed inspection technique. For the annular or bottom plate anomaly
evaluation, tank needs to be shut down for the purpose of verification.

3.4.1 External Inspection

 Anomalies/defects shall be located using measuring tape.

 Location of anomalies/defects shall be located using an identified reference point.
 All corrosion products shall be removed.
 Length and width shall be confirmed using a measuring tape or engineers rule.
 Anomaly/defect depth shall be confirmed using pit gauge or depth gauge. For
large areas of pitting the pit gauge or depth gauge shall be suitably modified to
bridge the corrosion area.

3.4.2 Internal Inspection

 Anomalies/defects shall be located using measuring tape

 Location of anomalies/defects shall be located using an identified reference point
 Anomaly/defect area shall be inspected using UT techniques, ‘A’ scan, ‘B’ scan
or ‘C’ scan techniques shall be employed to locate internal anomaly/defect.
Thickness gauges shall not be used.
 The maximum wall loss, length of the anomaly/defect shall be confirmed by
manipulating the probe and mapping the shape of the anomalies/defects.
 The removal of coating shall be agreed on site taking into accounts of conditions.

4.0 REPORTING

MRA shall provide signed reports of all anomaly/defect verification indicating inspection technique
and findings.
