Importance of Classroom Management: Introduction:

Classroom Management: Classroom management is the process

by which teachers and schools create and maintain appropriate
behaviour of students in classroom settings. The purpose of
implementing classroom management strategies is to flatly
enhance behaviour and increase student academic engagement.
Effective classroom management principles work across almost
all subject areas and grade levels. When using a step of model in
which school-wide support is provided at the general level,
classroom behaviour management programs have shown to be
effective for 80- 85 percent of all students. More rigorous
programs may be needed for some students.

A classroom can be
well managed by a
teacher by following
these parameters

Effective management of a classroom:

Effective classroom management establishes and sustains an
orderly environment in classroom.
It increases meaningful academic learning and facilitates social
and emotional growth and at the same time decreases negative
behaviour and engage students academically. It is important to
make use of effective classroom management strategies at the
General level in a stepwise model, as they serve both as
prevention and involvement methods that promote positive
outcomes of students.
Classroom management are effective as because it increases the
success of the students by creating an orderly learning
environment that improves student’s academic skills and
competencies as well as their social and emotional development.
Classroom management systems are most effective when they are
attached to 3 basic principles:
1) Highlight student’s expectations for behaviour and learning
2) Stress upon active learning and student involvement.
3) Identify important student’s behaviour for success.
a) What behaviours are necessary to reach the objective of
learning activity?
b) What consequences does a particular learning activity have
for student’s part?
c) How will the teacher prepare students to take on these
responsibilities?
Effective classroom management is to maintain classroom
discipline in an efficient way.

Classroom Management Techniques:

Set Classroom rules to avoid chaos:

To keep the class absorbed: Classroom materials should be such

that the students don’t get distracted and thus focus on their
lesson.
To practice being just: Unbiased behaviour should be a teacher’s
motto while dealing with students.
She should avoid rash promise so as to make students trust her.
 To be humorous: Light hearted atmosphere should be provided
by the Teacher to the classroom to keep the students happy and
occupied. Thus, to make them more likely to obey the school
rules.
 To be hostile: Hostile behaviour towards the students can
deteriorate a teacher’s credibility; instead, positivity should be
maintained in classroom.
 To lead by example: One should always follow what one
preaches, whether it is in regard of attendance or observing
school rules.
 To avoid Bad Temper: Negative learning environment develops
when the Teacher is short tempered for, she risks losing her
credibility.
 To give opportunity to students: Make students feel responsible
and trusted by showing students that you have confidence in
their ability and that the overall management and flow of the
classroom is up to them to uphold.
 To avoid humiliation: Teachers will lose their authority in their
classroom and add to psychological damage in children as well as
fear and resentment if they belittle students.
 Be alert: Teachers should make sure to move around the class
and interact with each student so as to maintain a controlled and
well managed classroom.

Classroom management is important not only for controlling

classroom but it is crucial for a positive and successful learning
environment for students.

Factors Affecting Class Management: There are 2 factors

namely internal and external factors.
Internal factors:(factors inside classrooms) managing student’s
behaviour, organizing classroom activities and classroom
management techniques.

External factors:(factors outside classrooms) planning, Teacher’s

personality, Parents-Teacher meetings and psychological factors.
Classroom management can be elaborated into 2 distinct
approaches:

The behaviourism- It deals with behaviour problems in

classroom management.
The Pedagogical approach- It deals with the way teachers teach
and students learn Teachers deal with the behaviour pattern too.
The following factors affecting classroom management are
described as:
Effective instruction: Well-planned instruction, which should
include appropriate instructional activities like guided practice,
attention to individual students, providing immediate feedback,
and similar tasks tend to enhance order and effective learning.
On the contrary, chaotic instructional activities lead to disorder
in the classroom. Setting and implementing rules: Classroom
instruction should be undertaken in a business-like manner,
such as trying to achieve maximum amount of learning within
minimum time without disruption of other classroom activities.
Teachers need to act accordingly when rules are broken, for
example. Managing intervention: The need for intervention
increases when rules and instructional activities are not properly
implemented, and when varied forms of misbehaviour such as
mild verbal and physical aggression are demonstrated in the
classroom. These have to be dealt with appropriately and
immediately by the teacher. Based on experience, one who
frequently observes from the back of the classroom would
encounter less classrooms misbehaviour than one who is clearly
standing still in front of the room. It must be pointed out,
however, that many classroom interventions do not always lead
to improved learning. Some are counter-productive. Any
intervention that tends to interrupt the flow of the lesson, for
example, must be terminated right away. Response on
appropriate behaviour: The student expects feedback, whether or
not his behaviour is acceptable. It is good point to remember that
praise of behaviour would be more effective if done sparingly and
linked with good performance.

Classroom environment: Students normally would not want to

learn in very chaotic environment. Poorly managed classrooms,
for example, usually would not provide pleasant and supportive
learning environment.

Internal Factors Affecting Class Management: Defining

Classroom Rules By convincing students that the classroom rules
are compulsory, teachers may talk to children and discuss the
best way to make their classroom nice and safe. Teachers should
interact with the student the kind of rules required to attain such
a goal. Teachers should keep in mind the priority rules list that
makes for an all-inclusive classroom and an environment for
successful teaching and learning process. Significant rules that
need to be considered:
o Means of gaining attention of the adults
o Waiting until one finishes one’s speech
o Waiting until being called out o Safety (rules on lining up and
walking along the class) o Respect for all (say positive things for
the others and behave well with them)
o Care for Classroom and the inventory Understanding the
problem: Children with poor self-esteem are expected to have
more disciplinary problems. Teacher should make sure to
understand what can be considered a classroom problem, ways
of eliminating problems and ‘punishing’. Non-Disciplinary
problems:
o Guidance problem, which require individual psychological
intervention; educational problems, which should be handled
through grading or better motivated techniques;
o Personal disruptions that annoy the teacher but are not
disruptive to teaching.
First the Teachers should be able to identify the cause of
indiscipline, and then she should take the correct steps to avoid
it from reoccurring. It is essential to give the right kind of
punishment for misconduct.

How to manage classroom effectively by a teacher?

Teacher’s Flexibility:

Teacher should be flexible enough to handle a classroom. She

should be able to meet her students need. The Teacher should
make sure that the students can pick up the lessons, she can
think of ways of making her skills better. Self –reflection helps
teacher to see the improvements and make adjustments
accordingly. She can carry on the process of self-analysis and
reflect on her teaching abilities so as to make a difference to her
teaching career.

External Factors Affecting Class Management: Planning;

Planning is compulsory for supporting children and teachers at
each and every particular moment in class and outside it. A well-
designed and careful planning makes a successful Teacher.
Planning can be of two types:  Long- term planning  Short- term
planning should be flexible. If a weekly plan goes well Teacher
can continue. In any case if the children don’t react the way they
are expected to, then the planning should be modified so as to
make the children accommodate their reactions. In any case, if
for some reason the planning does not work for some unexpected
reason, it can be done once the trouble causing period is over.
The realization of the planning successfully depends on the time
that the staff has in its disposition to think, to meet and to
discuss their aims. Planning without any regard on their format
have to be dated and after the implementation and their
evaluation should be put in a portfolio in order to create a
documentation of what is achieved.

Effective Teacher: Teacher’s main role in a classroom is that of

a manager. Effective teaching and learning cannot take place in a
poorly managed class. Effective Teachers appear to be effective
with students of all achievement levels in spite of the levels of
heterogeneity in their classes. If a teacher is ineffective, students
will accomplish inadequate progress academically, regardless of
hoe similar or different they are regarding their academic
achievement. The effective teacher performs many functions that
can be organized into three major roles: (1) Most effective
instruction strategies to employ. (2) Design classroom curriculum
to facilitate student learning (3) Making effective use of classroom
management techniques.

Conclusion:
An occupation as complex as teaching can be easily stressful,
monotonous and mundane when not managed properly.

behaviour in classroom setting at the same time. For an effective
teaching-learning process to take place all teachers struggle for
gaining more knowledge and experiencing more in the fields of
