Answers and explanations

1)

Answer is 2.
Sentence A is wrong.
Comparing setup G and H, the difference is 5ml. That is part of the volume of object Z.
Since object Z is not fully immersed in the water, Object Z must be more than 5ml.
Note: to accurately measure the volume of Z, we need to ensure Z is fully submerged in
water.
Sentence B is true. By comparing setups E and F, the volume of X is 45ml-30ml = 15ml.
It is not possible to tell sentence C is true.

Sentence D is true.
We know that X is 15ml.
Looking at setup G, we can find the volume of the setup without X: 40ml – 15ml = 25ml.
Since all setups have equal amount of water, by comparing setup E (30ml) and setup G
(after removal of X which gives you 25ml), we know the volume of W is greater than Y.

24
Primary Science Exam Paper https://ScienceShifu.com
AndyLing@ScienceShifu.com

2)
Answer is 1.
This is a trick question. It may seem the question is asking you for warm air and we
might think it is water vapour. However, the question is interested in the processes taking
place in the water supply.
You need to read the question carefully. The first paragraph tells us about the “water is
lost in the cooling process”. The water gains heat from the warmer air and evaporates.
The question is interested in the processes taking place in the water supply that caused
warm air to become cool air.
We don’t choose condensation process as warm air contains less than 1% water vapour
(based on the science knowledge on the composition of air).

3) Answer is 1. We have to investigate the reason why temperature of air inside the small
pot falls.

Process A: The water in the wet sand gains heat from the warmer surrounding air in the
small pot and evaporates into water vapour.
Process B: Warmer air in the small pot loses heat to the cooler wet sand. Hence, temperature
of air in the small pot falls.

25
Primary Science Exam Paper https://ScienceShifu.com
AndyLing@ScienceShifu.com

4) Answer is 3.
For a bulb to light up, one end of the wire must be connected to the metal casing and the
other end of the wire connected to the metal tip.
Moreover, batteries must be connected properly in a series circuit.

Two batteries cancel each other as the negative end of the batteries are facing each other.

5) Answer is 1.
We cannot determine B is correct. We need to calculate the actual volume of Y by
measuring its dimensions (length, breadth and depth). Based on the setup, we can only see
its length and breadth.

Sentence D does not make sense. X is heavier because it has greater mass.

6) Answer is 2.
Sentence B is not relevant here
The trolley is moving along the horizontal ground. Gravitational force is not relevant to
explain this situation. Gravitational force is relevant when the situation involves a change
in height above the ground (Example: moving the trolley up a slope).
Take note: Frictional force is affected by the mass and the roughness of the surface.

26
Primary Science Exam Paper https://ScienceShifu.com
AndyLing@ScienceShifu.com

7) Answer is 2
Option 4 is wrong.
Take note: the room is lighted up in the first place. It has 80lux.
That means when we placed the opaque material in front of the light sensor, the light
sensor cannot detect any light from the torch. Instead, the light sensor detects the light
from the surroundings which is 80lux.
80lux will be the minimum reading on the data logger.

8) (a) Elastic Spring force. [1]

(b) Spring Y has reached its elastic limit and cannot be stretched further. [1]

(c) The springs were made of different materials. [1]

9) Step 1.Lift up the glass jar to allow the ants to escape. [1]
Step 2. Record the number of ants at each coloured sugar. The coloured sugar that
attracted the most ants is the preferred colour. [1]
Note: This is an experimental-based question. You are required to describe the steps
correctly. Take note of the underlined keywords.

10) (a) Both containers remain at the same position. [1]

Take note: Setup Q (including container Q and the syringe) has a fixed mass. When
we pump air from the syringe to container Q, the mass of air is transferred from the
syringe to container Q. There is no change in mass of the entire setup Q

(b) Air can be compressed. [1]

27
Primary Science Exam Paper https://ScienceShifu.com
AndyLing@ScienceShifu.com

11) (a) The balancing scale with container X will be lowered

OR
the container Y will move higher. [0.5]
When more air was pumped into X, there is greater mass of air in X than in Y and
container X becomes heavier. [0.5]
Note: In Question 11, we are pumping additional mass of air into X. In question
10, we are transferring the air from the syringe to the container.

What can we learn from questions 10 and 11?

You must analyse the situation carefully. If air is transferred from one container to
the next within the same setup, the mass of the setup remains the same.

(b) 100cm3 [1]

Reason: Air has no fixed volume and can be compressed.

12) (a) Opaque OR translucent [1]

(b) This ensures only the light from the torch will be blocked by the material. [1]

13) The clue lies in the sentence “A scientist transferred the information to the cells P and Q”.
That means the scientist has transferred the genetic information of the glowing worm to
the nucleus of the other two cells.

Tick () the characteristics that the new cells P and Q would have. [2]
Characteristic Cell P Cell Q

14) (a)
Battery Wire Train Train

Chemical Electrical Kinetic Heat

Potential energy energy energy energy

(b) When the food was removed from the train, the mass of the train decreases. There is
less frictional force between the wheels of the train and the track. The train can
move faster. [1]

See the explanations on forces here >>>

https://scienceshifu.com/common-mistakes-on-forces/

Look at the “Type of force: Frictional force” it provides the proper

answering technique.

(c) When the train is moving up the slope, some of the force exerted by the train will
have to go against the downward gravitational force acting on the train. [1]

As a result, there is less upward force exerted by the train to move up a slope and
the train slows down. [1]

Note: We need to compare the two forces (gravitational force and the upward force
exerted by the train).

OR

As the train moves up the slope, some of the kinetic energy of the train is
converted to gravitational potential energy. [1] Hence, there is less kinetic energy
in the train and it moves slower. [1]

Note: Different situations have different energy conversions.

See the explanations on energy conversion >>>

15) (a) The function of the heart is to pump blood rich in oxygen and digested food to the
body cells for respiration. Waste substances such as carbon dioxide is pumped to
the lungs for removal. [1]
(b) Swimming is a strenuous/ vigorous activity which requires more energy. [0.5] Thus,
the heart pumps more blood rich in oxygen and digested food to the arms and
legs for respiration to release more energy needed for swimming. [1]

The heart pumps blood faster to transport more carbon dioxide to the lungs for
removal. [0.5]

(c) Evidence: There is more blood pumped to the arms and legs and less blood to the
small intestine. [1]

Hence, less digested food in the small intestine is absorbed into the blood. [1]

16) (a) When the switch is closed, the circuit is closed and electricity flows through circuit.
The iron rod would be magnetised and become an electromagnet. [0.5]
The electromagnet repels the magnet below and the swing moves forward. [0.5]
When the swing moves forward, X is not in contact with the wire. The circuit is open
and the iron rod could not repel the magnet. [0.5]
Gravitational force then pulls the swing down and back to its original position.
[0.5]

Note:
There are 4 situations here.
1) Closed switch
2) Why did the swing move forward?
3) What happens when X and the wire is no longer in contact?
4) Why did the swing go back to its original position?
Each situation has a science concept involved.

17) (a) A greater force is exerted on the ball. When the ball hits the pin, there is greater
force exerted on the bowling pin, causing the pin to move a greater distance. [1]

(b) Apply lubricant on the surface. When the ball rolls on the ground, less kinetic
energy of the bowling ball is converted to heat energy due to less friction. [1]

When the ball hits the pin, there is greater kinetic energy of the bowling ball is
converted to greater kinetic energy of the pin. The pin moved further. [1]

Note: Different situations have different energy conversions.

See the explanations on energy conversion >>>

https://scienceshifu.com/common-mistakes-on-energy-conversion/

(c) The ball will change its direction. [1]

(d) The gloves increase friction between the bat and the gloves, Vivian’s brother can
swing bat with more control when he uses the gloves instead of without gloves. [1]
Note: you have to provide the benefit of having greater friction.

Wrong answer: Greater friction between the hand and the bat.
Why is the answer wrong? Friction is a contact force. It is the glove that comes
into contact with the bat.
What can we learn from this question?

You must identify the correct surfaces that are in contact.

18 (a) The coffee powder and water gains heat from the hot sand until the water boils. [1]

(b) It will take a shorter time for the coffee drink to boil.
The metal container is heated up and is at a high temperature. There is a large
temperature difference between the coffee drink and the hot metal container. [1]
Coffee drink gains heat faster from the hot metal container and the drink will take
a shorter time to boil. [1]
