“…students need continued positive
interactions with teachers and peers,
meaningful assignments and
activities that allow them to find and
express their uniqueness, and
creative outlets to deepen their
knowledge.”

To Build Community
Art Share
During this time, kids can reflect on their own art, or the art of
others. Meaning painting, drawing, music, etc. Make sure that you
have time carved out for discussion where the students can find
connections between their interests. The whole point of this is to
give a space for students to have respectful conversations.

Playing Instruments
The hope for this scenario is that students learn to work together,
as well as letting each student have a voice. The author
recommends that you sit them in a circle, and honestly you do not
even need instruments.
Help with Self Awareness
Repeated Doodles
Peterson recommends that students doodle before starting an assignment, or
if they are feeling a little antsy. This is in hopes that students will get a nice
brain brake in between learning and they might find something about
themselves they didn’t know. I see this as something that fun, yet might get
out of hand. I know I used to doodle in class, and a lot of time it would actually
distract me from my learning.

Poems or Monologues
This is pretty self explanatory, during this activity you have students write
about themselves and what they are feeling. As you progress into older
grades, they more complex your prompts should get, and visa versa for
younger grades. The hope is that students will become more self aware for
their feelings. Due to this being a more personal activity, you can have
students share their work, or you don’t have to.
Providing a Deeper Understanding for
their Learning
Dramatization
Have students partake in acting. This will help them not only
understand the content more, but also help them step into others
shoes.

Music and History

Peterson recommends that you play music of the era that you are
teaching. She also recommends that you give them time to research
songs, and artist during that time period. This will allow students to
to gain a whole new perspective on the events they are learning.
Thanks!
