Dear Student,

This document is with reference to your upcoming hiring process with McKinsey & Company.

Interviews at McKinsey are challenging because our work is challenging. As with any challenging objective, good preparation is
essential. We encourage you to spend as much time as you can preparing for your interviews so that you can demonstrate your
best qualities to our interviewers. Below is an overview of what to expect in the interviews and at the very bottom of this
message I have shared some interview prep guidance and web links as well.

In particular, we strongly recommend that you follow these preparation guidelines.

Preparing for your interview:

1) Knowledge Proficiency Interviews

The purpose of the Knowledge Interview is for you to demonstrate the breadth and depth of your skills and professional
experience developed over time in the functional and/or industry sectors in which you have worked. The questions will relate to
the expertise needed for the role for which you're interviewing so the best form of preparation is to review the online job
description, any other materials you may already have about the team, and come prepared with several compelling examples
from your career that you feel demonstrate these qualifications.

2) Case Interviews

Although you are applying for this role, the cases which you are asked to solve may not be related to the industry or functional
focus of the role. Remember, the content of the case itself is merely a vehicle to illustrate the process of discussing a case, and
therefore you should not spend too much time on the specifics of the solutions. A few tips to succeed are:

Ensure you take time to think about what it is needed

Ensure you are clear on the problem that needs to be solved
Ensure you write down important information and ask about anything that is missing or unclear
Ensure you develop and talk through an overall approach before diving into detail
Ensure you discuss solutions to quantitative questions step by step with the interviewer
On quantitative questions, it may be best to use an estimation – this is fine on complex sums as long as it won’t affect the end
result too much
Always try to synthesize and make sure you are coming back to the original question/problem you were asked to solve

3) Experience (Behavioral) Interview

The purpose of the Experience Interview is for you to illustrate your skills in behavioral areas by discussing ,in depth,
experiences from your past where you had to use these skills. A typical interview runs for 45-60 mins, assessing on
key behavioral aspects we look for in a potential hire, often in combination with one or more problem solving case(s).
It is important that you prepare several good examples to discuss, and that you are capable of discussing them in an effective
manner. For this reason, you should keep these things in mind:
§ The core dimensions which we are looking for are entrepreneurial drive, leadership or personal impact.
§ Our interviewers will test for one of these in one interview so ensure you are clear on which one of these we are discussing
with you. These are also explained on our website in more detail.
§ Think through and be willing to discuss several instances in your past where you have needed to use your skills in order to
succeed. These instances should have been challenging and stretching to demonstrate your true potential.
§ Be prepared to discuss your role in a great degree of detail. The focus should be less on the outcome, but more on the
specifics of how you went about achieving the outcome.
