Junior Debate Book 01

Let’s meet Harry!

Harry is in second grade in middle school. His school allows

all kinds of food to be brought to school. The school sells pizza,
burgers, and fries in the cafeteria. There are vending machines all

of chips when he feels like it. Harry also loves drinking soda. He
doesn’t have to go far to get a can. Do you think Harry could grow
up as a healthy boy?

LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!!!

Go Sally!
I agree.

I don’t want junk food in my school. It’s not good for my

health. This kind of food contains too much fat and sugar.
I don’t want to get addicted to the wrong kind of food.
Our schools should not only be about numbers, theories,
history and language. We must also be educated about life.
The school must set a good example so that kids will go
down the right path.

“ Go Rob!
I agree.

Being overweight is a real problem. There are so many

kinds of food that are so delicious but are really bad for
our bodies. It’s not easy to control our appetite especially
at this age. As students, we spend most of our days in
school. If junk food is readily available there, it would be
much more difficult to stick to a proper diet. Young people
may be suffering from obesity before they know it.

Go Wendy!
I disagree.

Being students, we receive a limited amount of pocket

money. Junk food is cheap and affordable. We need
something that we can afford when we’re feeling hungry
in school. If we can’t buy the food because we don’t have
enough money, we might end up suffering more during the
day. It’s impossible to learn on an empty stomach.

“ Go John!
I disagree.

If you ban junk food in schools, I guarantee that kids

would want it more. Junk food would seem more
appetizing just because someone is forbidding it. If the
school doesn’t give it much attention, kids would just
choose for themselves. They already know the bad
effects of eating too much junk food. We have to trust the
students to make the right decision.

Go Jessica!

Do you know how much homework we have to do every

day? Searching for facts and information has gotten easier
because of the invention of gadgets and the Internet. It’s
good to take advantage of what is available to us. We don’t
need to spend time going to libraries and looking through
hundreds of books to find just one answer. The information
that we need is just a click away.

“ Go David!
I agree.

If we get hurt in school or if there is an accident, we

would want to have an easy way to contact our parents.
It’s not easy to look for a pay phone or ask around to

emergencies, it is important for kids to be able to reach

Kids rely too much on their phones nowadays. They can’t

LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!!!

Go Sofia!
I agree.

I feel much safer with a dog at home. I know he can scare

intruders away. He can detect if something is wrong. His
bark is almost a reminder for us to stay alert and make
sure that we are protected. My dog also keeps me safe
when I go for a walk or for a jog at night. It’s nice to have a
companion that will stay loyal for a lifetime.

“ Go Lucas!
I agree.

Having a pet just makes me feel good. I love cuddling

with my puppy and playing with him outside. He helps me
calm down whenever I feel stressed from school. He has
a way of turning a bad day around. I take care of my dog
and my dog takes care of me. I learn a lot of things from
him. The most important lesson I’ve learned from him is
that kindness breeds loyalty. I know that my dog and I
would always be there for each other.

Go Grace!
I disagree.

If you want to have a pet, be prepared to spend a lot of

money. You have to buy their food. They also need to have
their shots which don’t come cheap. They need treatment
when they get sick. Our animals need to be healthy and
happy just like humans. In order for that to happen, money
is essential. For me, I would rather invest my money for my
future.

“ Go Liam!
I disagree.

We can’t get out of it even if we try. If we have a pet, we

need to clean up after them. We need to feed them and
spend time with them. It’s like taking care of a child. It
is a big responsibility. All the members of my family are
already busy with their own tasks. We can’t afford to have
a pet on top of our daily activities. Having a pet would just
have to take a backseat in our lives.

LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!!!

Go Hannah!
I agree.

I’m a really shy girl. I’m not comfortable talking to different

kinds of people. However, if you put a guitar in my hand, I
feel that I can do anything. Music is how I express myself.
It’s something that I can never do with words. That’s
why I think playing a musical instrument can be a great
contribution to a young person’s life.

“ Go Logan!
I agree.

Instead of wasting my time on video games and television,

I would rather pick up my violin and make beautiful music.
It’s a way of developing myself. It is not only for myself but
it’s something that I can share with the world. I want to be
creative and come up with something beautiful that would
be remembered forever. I want my parents to be proud
of me. More importantly, I want to be proud for making
something of myself.

Go Stella!
I disagree.

I don’t have time for musical instruments. I want to focus

on school, my family and my friends. It’s a nice hobby, don’t
get me wrong. However, there are more important things
to me. Learning how to play a musical instrument will take
too much of my time. These are moments that I can spend
preparing for my future and developing relationships.

“ Go Carter!
I disagree.

I know that learning a musical instrument is expensive.

My parents would have to buy the instrument for me to
practice on. Lessons are not cheap either. I need to get a
private tutor if I want to learn how to play. It doesn’t seem
worth it. There are other activities I can get engaged in
that won’t cost money. We have to be practical nowadays.
Learning how to play a musical instrument is just an
unnecessary luxury.
