Recognizing Ethical Problem

Direction: Name five (5) events in past months, weeks, or days that can be qualified as ethical
problems. Give your reasons. You can use stories or events published in newspaper or aired on
television.
Please give proper acknowledgement of the source. You don’t need to get the whole
story. This activity is meant to asses whether you can recognize ethical problems.

1. Traffic constable caught on cam asking for money, confirmed an MMDA.

GMA News YouTube · GMA News · Apr 29, 2013
- This event qualified as ethical problem, although this happened unethically. Unethical because
what an MMDA-traffic constable did is unacceptable, supposedly he’s job is to give a ticket to
those drivers who violated the rules and ordinance in the traffic management but he asks for
money which violates “professional ethics”.

2. Attempted bribery of an MMDA traffic enforcer, caught on camera

YouTube · GMA News · Sep 6, 2018 (Balitanghali is the daily noontime newscast of GMA News
TV anchored by Raffy Tima and Pia Arcangel)

- Contrary to the first event, this time a Driver attempts to give money to an MMDA for an
escape. Luckily an MMDA is a good person who stands with a so called “professional ethics”, he
declined the bribe and never get tempted instead gave a ticket and arrest the driver. This is a
good and acceptable behavior which made the event qualified as an ethical problem.

3. A Gay-Man was attacked by a group of young men.

(Beki, bigla na lang sinipa ng isang miyembro ng grupo ng kabataan!)
Source: Facebook · CIS Media Radio Television Philippines · Aug 28, 2021

- Let’s put the scene in the situation that the group of young men has a problem “aesthetically”
either they hate a gay or his looks, but still it is no good, unrighteous and worst unacceptable to
attack the Gay-Man, knowing that the man was just walking by the street and have nothing did to
them. In this case I can say that it is more than aesthetic and qualify as ethical problem, because
the worst was happened.
4. TNVS driver, returned the money left by the owner amounting to P1.6 million
Aired: July 22, 2022 by. ABS-CBN News
- In this event, the driver chooses not to run the money for himself out of dilemma, rather he
returned it back to the owner. Because of his honesty and Good heart, many people got amazes
and inspired. His willingness to do good is a moral which proves his fear to do bad action. This
made the event to qualify as ethical problem.
5. ‘Single mom’ gone viral after stealing in the store, not true?
HINDI raw totoo ang mga naunang kumalat na balita ukol sa diumano’y single mom na
nagnakaw ng mga lobo, mantika, at gatas sa isang shopping center sa Cagayan de Oro City.

- This event was confirmed true but false accusation and yet a closed case because the owner of
the store freed the accused and let her pay a fine. However, this case was debatable due to
uncertainties, but this is for sure what the lady did was a mistake. She knows already what is
wrong and right yet she chooses to do what is wrong either she was tempted maybe because she
wants to have something to prepare for the birthday of whoever she wanted to celebrate, still she
made a mistake and it is unethical. Therefor I conclude that this event is qualified as ethical
problem.

B. Essay. Answer the following questions correctly. (10 points each)

1. Explain the material object of ethics.

Answer: Material object of ethics an object having a real physical existence independent of
mind or consciousness. The material object of ethics a human act it is either someone, a group
of institution or any of the social organization with the consciousness to do moral actions and
rational activities. However, I consider myself or anyone as a material object of ethics that is if I
have the intension and willingness to act ethically.
2. Why is the human called “the only moral creature”? What makes him/her moral?
Answer: The human is called “the only moral creature”, because, among living creatures created
by God, the Human is the special, the highest form of a living creature which created with
consciousness, to think, feel, decide and act according to what the Creator made us do. We have
the heart to feel emotions, mind to think and decide, eyes to see, mouth to speak, a body to act
that made as to become moral through the actions made by the human body, the freedom to
decide and think, and the ability to do Good and avoid bad makes us moral.
3. Explain the importance of the assumption of ethics in setting standards of moral
responsibility. Provide specific examples in your explanations.
Answer: Assumptions are fundamental beliefs or statements that are accepted to be true without
the burden of providing evidence or of proof. In Ethics there are two considered important and
most common assumptions. First is that “man is a rational being”, where man is capable of
knowing right and wrong. For example, a man is a rational being, in which we are capable to
determine the right and wrong. It is right to drink alcoholic drinks with moderation but if we
come to the point that you are going to being wild and act destructive which wrong. The second
is that “man is free”, the freedom to act according to his will, and has the power to act. This
implies our freedom to do anything we want but because ethics have set a standard for our
freedom to not being abused. However, by setting standards is to distinguish judgment in an
action as it is ethical or unethical, good or bad, and right or wrong. With the standards, we could
determine which is moral and immoral and this assumptions could mitigate a degree of people’s
moral responsibility.
