Have you ever been so sick of studying English? Cause we have
learnt English since we were young, right? In a kindergarten school, we were taught to memorize English alphabet and some easy words such as an ant, a bat, and a cat. In elementary school, we learned how to make a sentence, how to converse, and some harder words. In middle school, we learned basic English grammar, and how to write an essay. In high school, we learned Advanced English grammar, academic writing, and translation. We have learnt English for more than 15 years. The question remains that “what is the purpose of learning English?”
As we know, English is the language of international
communication. There are hundreds of millions of English speakers across the globe. Being able to speak English means being able to talk to everybody around the world. For example, I use English to communicate with local people while traveling abroad. I use English to book a restaurant and a hotel. I use English to order food and drink. I also talk to a foreigner at a church in English. Once I learned free diving, the instructor was Russian, so we had to use English to talk to each other, too.
English is the language of Internet, news, technology and
computers. Learning English is important as it gives us access to over half the content on the Internet. Knowing how to read English will allow you access to billions of pages of information which may not be otherwise available! You can read online news articles from BCC, CNN, New York Time, NASA etc. You can leave comments on an English video. You can participate in a discussion on a forum. For instance, I usually search some information on the Internet for my work and I like to read Bangkok Post Online.
English is the language of education. Many reliable textbooks
are written in English and most of them aren’t translated into Thai, my first language, so I have to read them in English. English language also opens new educational opportunities. I got a scholarship to United States next year and one of my friends got a scholarship to Singapore.
English is the language of business. English is the dominant
business language and it has become almost a necessity for people to speak English if they are to enter a global workforce. Global companies such as Airbus, Microsoft, Apple, or eBay have mandated English as their official corporate language. Furthermore, you will get paid more if you are capable of speaking English in a large number of companies.
And English is the language of the media industry. If you speak
English, you won't need to rely on the translations and subtitles anymore to enjoy your favorite books, songs, movies and TV shows. To be honest, I prefer reading fictions in the original language of the writers – English, because sometimes the feelings of words or idioms cannot be translated into Thai. And Movies or TV shows which have no translation don’t affect English speakers. For example, I like to watch TheEllenShow, Ben Phillips channel, and Jay Shetty channel and there’s no translation.
In conclusion, Ladies and Gentlemen, there are 5 reasons why
English language is so much important. First, English is a universal language. Second, English makes access to the content on the Internet easier for us. Third, English opens new educational opportunities. Forth, it opens new career opportunities also. Moreover, it gives us access to the world of Entertainment.
