SECTION D: READING COMPREHENSION (10marks)
Read the following passage carefully and use your own words answer the questions below
it.
It is a violent world we live in, one which displays a horrific variety of conflict,
insecurity and war. Schools witness shootings and stabbings. Communities break up.
Countries witness internal civil disorder and war. There are pockets of conflict and war on
every continent. We know about violent conflict from Iraq to Afghanistan and Syria, and
Congo, Sudan and other parts of Africa. In the last few years we have witnessed armed
conflict here in Cameroon, from Boko Haram in the North, and from secessionists in the
North West and South West region. Clearly, armed methods of resolving conflict have not
worked. It has become urgent, therefore, for us to turn to peaceful conflict resolution methods
that have been successful in other parts of the world. Here are a few possible strategies. First
of all, the use of mediation is an effective tool in conflict resolution. It involves a go-between
or mediator who can deal with the emotions coming from both sides of a conflict. Mediation
can be just what turns a conflict around. It may make the pride and anger from both sides look
like an anthill rather than an insurmountable mountain. It permits each side of the conflict to
begin to be reasonable again. Secondly, collaborative problem-solving works well in
resolving environmental and climate-related conflicts. This approach sets out to identify
common ground between the two parties. The focus is on the issues the parties have in
common, rather than on the differences. This approach is a listening strategy and enables all
parties to actively take ownership of the resolution of the conflict. Thirdly, all the parties
involved in the community dispute need a chance to speak. They should explain the facts as
they see them, and they should express their feeling. It is important for everyone to be able to
speak without being interrupted. Anyone wanting to interrupt and correct the speaker should
know that they will have a chance to speak later. Conflict resolution strategies are things we
can all do and need to do, beginning with our very communities and families. We can begin
by learning to apologise when we hurt somebody. This can be as simple as saying “I’m
sorry”. As we proceed, with conflict resolution, things might get chaotic and this derails the
talks. At such moments it is time to take a break. Upon returning to the table things will be
calmer.
