Teacher:

● Ms.von Beren
Grade level:
● Kindergarten
Instructional Objectives:
● Students will be able to count off from 10 the numbers 11-19 by understanding the
concept of place values
Approximate Lesson Length:
● This lesson should take around 15 minutes to complete
Materials:
● The beauty of this lesson is that there is little to no preparation in terms of gathering
materials and setting up the classroom.
● Teachers need to go to the Dollar Store or something like it and buy a pack of cotton
finger gloves so that every student can have their own pair.
● A bonus to this lesson is that after, each student will have gloves for outside in
case they forget theirs at home.
Procedure and Teacher Talk:
● Opening:
● Good morning students! Over the past couple of weeks, we have been building up
our counting toolbox to help us count tricky numbers. So far, we have added our
number line and Unifix cubes; today, I have added a handy new tool that will
help us count up from 10! Can everyone please open their counters toolbox and
see what's new there?
● Oh my! What are these? Gloves?
● Hmm, what could we be using gloves for? Can everyone turn and talk with the
person next to you and guess how we may use gloves to help us count up from 10
to larger numbers?
● During:
● I have noticed that we are already using our fingers to count our numbers which is
amazing! But when we are counting numbers bigger than 10 it can get confusing
because we only have 10 fingers! Plus, it can take a long time to get all the way to
19.
● A way I have thought of that can help us remember we don't need to start at 1 is
by putting on our cool new gloves and showing all of our 10 fingers.
● Can you all do that?
● Good! Let's push out our 10 fingers and show off these gloves.
● Now when you do that, say 10! Let's do that again a few times.
● Wow! You all are really great at showing me your 10; now, let's try something a
little different.
● Let's say we have the number 11. How do we think we can count to 11 with our
new method? Hmm. Take a moment and think about how we could do that.
● Should we try it? Alright, everyone, push out their 10 and say 10. Now put up 1
finger and push it out and say 11. Good, now we know how to count 11, even
though we only have 10 fingers. We also know that this is the correct answer
because we know that 10+1=11.
● Great, let us try 17. Everyone, please put out your 10 and say 10. Now let's count
up by putting a finger out every time we count the next number. So we have 10,
11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17! Look at that.
● Should we try any other numbers? Can someone give me another number, 11-19?
Demonstrate a few or all of the numbers students suggest for practice.
● Closing:
● I am so impressed with all of you being able to use our new gloves to start at 10
and count up.
● Remember that our gloves will always be in our counters toolbox, and they
represent 10. We can continue to use them to count up from 10 when we have
bigger numbers.
Assessment:
● There is no formal assessment that will be used directly after this introductory lesson;
however, as a teacher, we should be monitoring which students appear to be
understanding the concept and note which students may need additional support
throughout the unit.
