LESSON EXEMPLAR IN SCIENCE

Grade ____
7 Quarter ___
1

Lesson Content
1. Use of models
2. The Particle model and changes of state
3. Planning, following, and recording scientific investigations
4. Solutions, solubility, and concentration
Lesson Competency
1. Recognize that scientists use models to explain phenomena that cannot be easily seen
or detected.
Lesson Content Standard
1. Scientists use models to explain phenomena.
2. The particle model explains the properties of solids, liquids, and gases and the processes
involved in changes of state.
3. Diagrams and flowcharts are very useful in demonstrating and explaining the motion and
arrangement of particles during changes of state.
4. There are specific processes for planning, conducting, and recording scientific
investigations.
5. The properties of solutions such as solubility and reaction to litmus determine their use.
Performance Standard
By the end of the quarter, learners recognize that scientists use models to describe the particle
model of matter. They use diagrams and illustrations to explain the motion and arrangement
of particles during changes of state. They demonstrate an understanding of the role of solute
and solvent in solutions and the factors that affect solubility. They demonstrate skills to plan
and conduct a scientific investigation making accurate measurements and using standard
units.
Suggested Performance Task
A. Design and carry out an investigation to determine the amount of salt in a sample of
seawater.
Learning across Curriculum
1) Mathematics - Understanding scale models and their applications in various fields.
2) History - Analyzing historical models and their impact on scientific understanding.
3) English - Exploring the use of literary devices as models to convey complex ideas.

TRIVIA QUESTION FOR THE DAY:

1. What do scientists make to help us understand things we can't see, like germs or space?
ANSWER TO THE TRIVIA QUESTION: Models.

1. ELICIT

Teaching Strategy: Brainstorming

Instructional Materials: Chart paper, markers

Anecdote 2 - Discuss the use of traditional herbal remedies passed down through generations
as models for understanding the human body.

2. ENGAGE

Teaching Strategy: Cooperative Learning

Instructional Materials: Index cards, pens

1) Idea - Divide the class into groups and assign each group a natural phenomenon (e.g.,
lightning, earthquakes). Have them create a model or diagram to explain how the phenomenon
occurs.
2) Idea - Use a virtual field trip to a science museum where students can interact with different
models and discuss their significance.

3. EXPLORE

Activity 1: Creating a Model

Teaching Strategy: Inquiry-Based Learning

Materials: Clay, various household objects

Significance: Students will create models to explain a specific phenomenon (e.g., water cycle,
solar eclipse).

Instructions:
1) Provide students with clay and various household objects.
2) Instruct them to create a model that represents the chosen phenomenon.
3) Students will present their models to the class and explain how they represent the
phenomenon.

Rubric:
- Accuracy of the model: 5 pts
- Clear explanation: 5 pts
- Creativity: 5 pts

Assessment Questions:
1) How does your model represent the phenomenon?
2) What are the limitations of using a model to understand the phenomenon?
3) How can models be improved to better explain the phenomenon?

Activity 2: Analyzing Historical Models

Teaching Strategy: Case Studies

Materials: Textbooks, internet access

Significance: Students will analyze historical models used by scientists to explain phenomena.

Instructions:
1) Provide students with examples of historical models (e.g., Ptolemaic model of the solar
system, phlogiston theory).
2) In small groups, have students research and analyze the models, discussing their strengths
and limitations.
3) Each group will present their findings to the class and engage in a discussion about the
evolution of scientific models.

Rubric:
- Accuracy of analysis: 5 pts
- Clarity of presentation: 5 pts
- Active participation in the discussion: 5 pts

Assessment Questions:
1) How did the historical models contribute to the understanding of phenomena during their
time?
2) What were the limitations of these models compared to the models used today?
3) How do scientists use historical models to improve current understanding?

Activity 3: Literary Models

Teaching Strategy: Concept Mapping

Materials: Chart paper, markers

Significance: Students will explore how literary devices serve as models for conveying complex
ideas.

Instructions:
1) Assign each student a literary device (e.g., simile, metaphor, personification).
2) Have students create a concept map that illustrates how their assigned literary device can
be used as a model to explain a scientific concept.
3) Students will present their concept maps to the class and explain their chosen connections.

Rubric:
- Clarity of connections: 5 pts
- Creativity in using the literary device: 5 pts
- Presentation skills: 5 pts

Assessment Questions:
1) How does the literary device you chose enhance the understanding of the scientific concept?
2) Can you think of other literary devices that can serve as models for scientific explanations?
Explain.
3) How can the use of literary models impact the communication of scientific ideas to a wider
audience?

4. EXPLAIN

Example 1: The teacher explains the concept of models in science using visual aids and real-
life examples. Students engage in a discussion about the different types of models and their
importance in scientific understanding.

Example 2: The teacher presents a case study where scientists used models to explain a

their understanding.

5. ELABORATE

Teaching Strategy: Project-Based Learning

Task 1: Design a Model

Task 2: Create a Science Comic Strip

6. EVALUATE

Teaching Strategy: Games and Gamification

Instructional Materials: Online quiz platform

Question 1: What is the purpose of using models in scientific explanations?
