Dualism says there is a immaterial mind which is responsible for consciousness

monoism is explained by brain and set of nervous systems

conscious from biological perspective

structuralism and functionalism talks about consciousness

environmental events includes everything we see and listen, like a screen which is an environmental
stimulus

cognitive events mean our thoughts and memories

dualism says that consciousness arises form immaterial part of mind and soul is giving us awareness

monoism says consciousness arises from brain or nervous system

disorders to explain dualistic pov of consciousness

video presented in class: split brain patient joe being tested with stimuli presented in diffrrent visual
fields

MAKES SENSE ONLY UN CONTEXT OF VIDEO

brain visual cortex is occipital lobe and damage to that part of brain cause blindness(earlier
thought).Presently it is thought it does not cause complete blindness

they cannot see anything but when asked to guess where the object is,they can find the change
accurately despite not being able to see it.their brain can unconsciously find the pattern despite not
being able to see it consciously

the theory proposed is of a ventral and dorsal visual systems, dorsal one serves to help with hand
movements and locomotion while ventral helps to recognises faces and such

in split brain phenomemon, the brain cannot consciously see a glass because the different
hemispheres of the brain are giving a distorted vision of a glass but unconsciously we can see it and
hold for a glass when we reach out for it and are surprised because we cannot even see the glass
consciously
during epilepsy people have seizures which is uncontrolled electric conduction,
in the above diagram,a split brained person will say he sees an apple because left brain sees only the
apple and left brain is responsible for speech but he will pick up the spoon because right brain is
responsible for motor functions, the left brain does not see the spoon and only the right brain can
see the spoon
if one part of the brain(for eg left was damaged) then person would not be able to see
corresponding item(in this case apple and spoon if right is damged) and brain will try to
form(compensate for missing part) a complete picture but will not be able to capture full detail of
the missing part and right part of vision will miss a lot of details.

2:12 the left brain does not see the pan and left hand is able to draw the pan but he cannot say he
saw the word pan,it is like two different people functioning together

it does not disprove the immaterial but proves there is some material part of consciousness
