- The data provided are collected both on and off the archaeological sites, giving us a more
comprehensive picture of the historical and environmental development of the region and their
interaction.
- The main aim of the Frontier Studies project, on which this paper is based, was to explore the
periods that preceded the emergence of the wealthy communities that possessed the gold masks. It
is clear from the archaeological findings that there were some changes in settlement patterns, but
the underlying cause was unknown or explained as merely sociological and technological. Thanks to
the excavations we have been able to observe the importance of another huge factor that shaped
the settlement, and that is the natural environment. As a result of tectonic movements, which were
probably related to a series of earthquakes in the late 12th century BC, a huge part of the present-
day Ohrid and Sturga Plain was flooded, causing a change in this very area. This change can also be
observed in neighboring areas of the Lake District.
