Pulses Monthly Report
February, 2022
Pulses Sector-Highlights
Rabi sowing is over now except for Moong and Urad where it may continue till March to end -May under
the summer season. Final Rabi sowing acreage for Chana and Masur is higher by 3.85 and 4.32%
respectively this year despite the slower beginning and arrivals are expected to increase by mid-Feb.
Arrivals of new Chana in Maharashtra and Masur in M.P. has been reported in limited quantities and quality
wise condition of seed is good so far. Farmers have covered168.27 lakh ha under pulses till 4 th Feb-
2022.Urad and Moong area stands at 8.17 and 5.13 lakh ha, down by 1.92 and 27 %respectively. Chana
and lentil area stand at 114.27 lakh ha and 17.64 lakh ha. Weather condition is good so far and the prospect
of bumper crop seems on the card under the prevailing weather condition. The inner tone in pulses market
has weakened now. Availability from Rabi crops and the continuous import would ensure ample availability
in domestic market and so,pressure on price might continue despite the ongoing procurement drive.
Sowing of Chana is over now and area is up by 3.85 % to 114.27 lakh ha despite less area coverage in
major states like Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand & Karnataka. Loss in area in these states was well
covered by states like Maharashtra and Gujarat (up by 8.43 % & 34.45%) respectively. The overall price
outlook indicates comfortable for consumers in the near to medium term as the crop size may exceed 104
lakh MT against 97 lakh MT last year. Apart from this, the import flow from the least developed countries
increased to 2.06 Lakh MT in 9 months against 1.40 lakh MT last year. This year up to Mar-2022, total
Chana import volume may increase to 3 lakh MT. The sluggish demand, continuous sale by Nafed below
4850 and the new arrivals in Mha and M.P., may continue to pressurize Chana cash market under normal
weather condition. Supply side would continue to increase. In Bikaner Chana prices decreased by Rs 400 to
4700 during last one month. It may move down to Rs 4300-4500 by the end of Feb.
Despite the downward revision of Tur production to 37.11 from the previous AW estimate of 40.22 lakh
MT for MY 2021-22, decreasing quotes in Myanmar to $780 from $805 during last 20 days, new arrivals,
the good crop size (2.50 lakh MT) in Myanmar, likely the improved import volume in Feb & March may keep
tur price under pressure and it may decrease further by Rs200. Buyers, mills & stockists are expected to
start buying again in a couple of weeks and they may prefer to buy imported Tur, available abundantly at
cheaper rate. The procurement drive may support market to some extent. Lemon Tur availability at 5950-
6000 in Mumbai would continue to cap market price. If weather turns rough and extends its phase &
damage matured crop standing at the fields in Gujarat, M.P., U,P, & Bihar, the declining trend may change.
The import flow, weather condition and the expected buying activities are crucial and might be a price
driving force in the coming weeks. The overall tone is steady to slightly weak in the short term. Crop of
Tanzania Malawi and Mozambique is available in the range of Rs. 5400-5600 in Mumbai. The arrival pace
is yet to pick up.
Urad cash market continued to trade under pressure as area continues to recover. Now it is 1.92% down
from last year same time. Good import prospects from Myanmar and continuous release by stockists have
weakened the inner tone in the market. Availability in Myanmar is expected to be over 6.5 -7.5 lakh MT,
and the extended import timeline by India till June-2022 from the previous deadline of March-2022 would
ensure ample availability in India. Apart from it, arrivals from the south Indian states are expected to start
from the end Feb. The new crop from Myanmar too would hit India in March. So, the traders, stockists and
Pulses Monthly Report

mills are very cautious to go for bulk buying. All these factors are pushing prices down. The price gap
between the imported & local crops is contracting and it may settle and stabilize after a decline by200- 300
more. Demand is yet to pick up. This year the local production has been pegged at 22.91 lakh MT crop
against 24.19 lakh MT last year. The import volume may increase to over 5.25 lakh MT against 3.20 last
year during Aug to Jul (MY). The overall tone seems steady to slightly weak in Feb. Prices decreased in
Mumbai by 7.5 % to Rs 5900 and Chennai by Rs 8% 5700 last week. It may touch to Rs5400-5500
Masur cash market continued to trade southward direction and it may continue. New arrival has started
in M.P. in limited quantity. Area coverage is up by 4.32% and quality of new crop coming into markets are
good.As crop condition is good so far, bumper production(13 LMT) is expected this year under the normal
weather condition. The arrival is expected from end February this year, the declining movement might be
limited during couple of weeks. Stockists are expected to start releasing old stock before the new crop hits
the market. Apart from this, the production forecast for Canada lentils for 2022-23 has been increased to
25 lakh MT against 16.06 lakh MT in 2021-22 in the initial estimate of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
(AAFC) . Stock at Indian ports are around 2 lakh MT while around 45 thousand is expected in Feb-2022. So
supply side is likely to be in comfortable zone and it will limit any upward momentum in coming weeks. This
week market traded down by 4.58% to 6575 in Indore while the other market eased proportionally. Under
prevailing condition spike in Lentil market is unlikely until and unless weather turns rough in the major
growing regions. AAFC has projected average yearly price to decrease to$725 per MT in 2022-23 from
$1080 in 2021-22. In Kanpur market it traded down by Rs 200 to 7100.Under the prevailing condition prices
of Masur may decrease by 800-1000 by the end March and may touch 6200-6400 from the current level.
Despite the slow recovery in Rabi area coverage, pressure on Moong price continues. Slack demand,
ample availability of stock with Nafed (over 3 lakh MT old and new) and continuous imports are keeping
prices suppressed. Forward trade in Tanzania has been struck at 5600-5700 and it would hit Indian market
in March. By then the Rabi crop, followed by the summer crop, too would start. Import would continue and
would keep market well supplied. Supply side is at comfortable level and prices are expected to stay at
current level (6000-6800). Downward movement is expected this week too and market may decrease by
200 from the current level. Availability of poor quality Moong in domestic markets, import flow, good
availability in Myanmar and the restricted buying by mills would continue to pressurize Moong market
despite good quantity (around 1.6 lakh MT (kharif new)) purchased by Nafed. Prices of Moong may slip by
100-200 more from the current level. FAQ quality is being traded at 6700 in Indore.
Marketing year (Urad: Aug to July, Moong: July to June, Tur: Dec to Nov. Chana: March to Feb and Masur: March to
Feb) AW kharif 4th Adv. production estimate for Tur, Moong & Urad published and Preliminary estimate s for Chana
and Masur.
Kharif Pulses:
Urad: Agriwatch has estimated 23.42 lakh MT Urad production in 2021-22 including 17.65 lakh MT in Kharif season.
Import volume would increase due to free import policy till Dec-2021 and the consignment would be allowed to hit
Indian ports till Jan-. New crop has already started. Carryout would decrease slightly due to quality and yield loss in
Kharif season.
Moong: Moong production has been pegged at22.98 lakh MT including rabi. Kharif Moong production has been
pegged at 15.75 lakh MT. Import may increase to 1.75 lakh MT .Import is free. If parity turns in favour of Indian
importers, import may continue. As carryout is low, price may continue to rule at higher level, supported by the higher
MSP. Procurement has already been started from 1st Nov-2021.. Carryout would slightly increase due to higher import
flow.
Tur: AW has published its final. Production estimates for Tur for 2021-22 and expects it to stay at 37.11 lakh MT,
slightly lower than last year. Bad weather condition during growth stages hampered the normal yield. As availability
would decrease, prices may move up again as soon as arrival pressure decreases.
Rabi Pulses:
Chana: Agriwatch has pegged Chana production at 103.46lakh MT for crop year 2021-22 while Masur at 12.91 lakh
MT, despite delayed sowing. Supply side would increase to 124.95 for Chana this year.
Pulses Monthly Report
February, 2022
Masur: AW preliminary estimate for Masur pegged at 12.91 LMT for 2021-22, slightly higher than last year. If weather
condition remains favorable, production may increase further. New crop in India comes in Feb end.
Chana (Chickpeas /Bengal Gram):
Market Recap:
Chana cash market is likely to move down by 200-300, taking cue from bumper production size and weak
oftake from mills. Farmers have covered 114.95 lakh ha so far, it was up by 4.48 % from the last year.
Sowing of Chana is over now. Demand for Chana dal and besan is still stable, which was expected from mid
of Nov earlier. New arrival has already started and It may keep price suppressed in Feb and March. Nafed
has old stock and higher carryout would cap spike in Chana market. Import continues and in Nov –Dec India
imported 45651. 7& 23251.23 MT respectively. Total import have gone up to 1.23 lakh MT from April to
Dec-2021. Availability is bound to increase so weak trend may prevail despite the planning of procurement
through govt. channels at MSP.
If weather remains favorable India is going to harvest over 103 lakh MT this year, considered to be ample
for the domestic consumption. However, weather conditions in Feb and Mar are very crucial and it has
potency to direct price either way up & down.At prevailing condition price may decrease by 200-300 from
the current level.Following graph illustrates Chana price movement in different markets:

Price Dynamics: Prices are likely to trade steady to slightly weak in Feb-2022 due to:
➢ New arrivals and bumper production prospects
➢ Weak demand for besan and dal
➢ Release of old stocks by private trades and NAFED
➢ Improvement in Dal and besan demand due marriage season.
➢ Import flow from the least developed countries.
Seasonality Index: hints steady to slightly weak movement for the local spot market in Feb -2022.

Desi Pea Kanpur Chana Kanpur
Price Dynamics:
Pea market is expected to trade steady to slightly weak in Feb-2022 due to:-
• Shifting of bulk consumers from matar to Chana dal in domestic market
• New arrivals
• Green vegetables availability at affordable prices
• Favorable weather for the standing crops.
Masur (Lentils):
Crop condition is good so far with higher area coverage, production size may improve from 11.91 to 13 lakh
MT , given the normal weather condition so far. Decreasing temperature at night is good for the growth of
standing crop. Demand for Masur and Masur dal has improved and its impact on price is visible once again.
Prices of Masur are decreasing in Kanpur and Mumbai. Accumulated imported stock and new arrival may
pressurize market to go down by Rs500-800 in coming weeks. Supply side from Canada would improve this
year too.

Masur Mill Quality Kanpur Masur Mumbai(Canada)
Price Dynamics:
In Jan-2021, average price in key market Kanpur was down to 7200 per qtl. in jan from 7450 in Dec. Prices
are likely to trade steady to slightly weak in Feb-2022.
Steady to weak tone is expected in due to:
• Higher area coverage/new arrival
• Availability of imported stock at ports
• Ample stock at ports
Outlook fo feb-2022: Steady to slightly weak movement might be seen
Lack of demand, improved arrival flow, availability of old stock and the extended timeline for import would
not allow Tur to move up soon. Other pulses too are ruling down and its impact is visible on other pulses
too. Apart from it, the bumper Rabi production prospect for Chana and Masur may continue to cap uptrend
in Pulses market. Buyers/stockists are very watchful and engaged in limited purchase. Tur in Gulbarga
market is being traded in the range of Rs 6000-6500 per qtl. Prices are expected to rule in the range of Rs
5500-6500, depending on quality of the crop. The crop size is definitely higher than what private trade
expects. Farmer’s holding is higher this year as they expect price rise June onward.

Market Outlook for Feb-2022: Prices are likely to trade steady to slightly weak.
Market Recap:
As of now Moong sowing is less and got delayed due to excess soil moistre in southern part of the country
due to rains during start of the sowing season. Rabi Moong has been sown on 4.77 lakh ha so far as
compared to 6.61 lakh ha last year. Normal area for Moong for Rabi and summer crops combined stands
at 9.41 lakh ha. If weather conditions will be bad continuous in Feb also then it may affect Rabi sowing of
Moong. Prices in Jaipur market are ruling in the range of Rs. 6000 to 6500 per qtl, depending on the quality
of the crop.
Mills are not buying in bulk volume as demand for dal is weak. Import flow would continue due to Moong
being in the free import list till March-2022. Imports may continue to land at Indian ports till January 2022
as per the extended time frame for import. Myanmar is offering Moong Anna Shewar at $880 and Moong
Pedi Shewar at $875 and Pokako at $980 per MT. Apart from it Nafed has around 3.4 LMT Moong and is in
a position to control Moong price as and when prices move up. Price of Moong (FAQ) stayed steady in Indore
