Transformer System
Description

The transformer is designed with maximum dimensions that ensure it complies with the safety distances from live
parts (established by norm IEC67936-1) and between parts isolated to ground.
The transformer's dimensions will be such that it can enter and exit through the wind turbine tower door in case of
failure or when requiring replacement, through the removable transformer replacement tool designed to that effect.
NOTE:
The maximum permitted weight of the transformer is 3500 kg.

Figure 2: Transformer

The transformers installed in the Gamesa 850 kW wind turbines are of the encapsulated dry type for indoor
installation, continuous service and natural cooling.
The dry transformer concept refers to the fact that the windings are not cooled by means of any liquid. These are
air-cooled.
The term encapsulated refers to the fact that the high-voltage windings are embedded within a plastic or resin
reinforcement.
This reinforcement acts as insulation so that the insulation distances indicated in the above section can be safely
reduced.

2.1 LOCATION OF THE TRANSFORMER

The transformer is located on the first tower platform, about 5 meters above ground level, bolted between two
plates that are also fixed to two parallel beams separated by 1026 mm. A third support point in the upper part,
consisting of a threaded, bolted rod fastened to the tower by a metal plate.

3 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSFORMER SYSTEM

The function of the transformer is to adapt the level of generated voltage to the levels of the high-voltage grid
so that all the power generated or consumed by the wind turbine can be transmitted. It raises the low-voltage
generation voltage (690 V) to the corresponding high-voltage value (generally 20 kV or 30 kV).
On the other hand, the presence of a transformer separates the low-voltage and high-voltage installations.
Because there is no direct electrical connection between the windings of both voltage levels and that the transformer
saturation curve prevents disproportionality of the current in relation with the voltage induced for high values,
the transformer provides certain protection for high overcurrent induction between the windings. The impedance
attributed to the transformer windings reduces the short circuit current value provided by the generator in the event
of a fault at the point of connection to the grid.
