1. You can find a living goddess in Nepal. In fact, there is more than one of them! Some
cities in Nepal actually have several goddesses. However, the best-known goddess lives in
the city of Katmandu. She is called the Royal Kumari, or Kumari Devi. This young woman
lives in a palace in the center of the city. In some South Asian countries, such as Nepal and
India, the tradition of worshipping a Kumari Devi is a popular and ancient one that continues
today.

2. A Kumari Devi is a girl, chosen when she is very young (usually between the ages of four and
seven) to be worshipped by both Hindus and Buddhists. of a goddness is quite complicated. Five

3 After she is chosen, she walks from the temple to her palace. She walks on a white
cloth, and this is the last time she will walk outside the palace. From now on, she will
only leave the palace on ceremonial occasions. At these times, she will be carried by
attendants on her gold chair. She will never wear shoes, and her feet are now sacred.
She will always wear red, her hair will be in a topknot, and on her forehead will be
painted the "fire eye" as a symbol of her special powers of perception. People believe
that if they see her for even a second, it will bring good luck. Crowds often wait below
her window at the palace to try to get a look at her. Government officials and people
who have connections are able to see her at the palace where she sits on a throne. She
receives them in silence and offers them her feet to touch and kiss to get her blessing.
Even the president of Nepal goes to get the Kumari's blessing.

4 The Kumari stops being a goddess as soon as she reaches puberty. Also, she stops
being a goddess if she has a serious illness or an injury and returns to her family. Then
selection starts for a new Kumari. The old Kumari receives a pension from the
government which is about twice the minimum wage or about four times the average
income in this poor country. There is a superstition that it is bad luck to marry a
Kumari. However, most Kumari get married and have children just like everyone else.
