INTRODUCTION

Today, voice assistants have become indispensable, be it driving, cooking or doing daily chores.
Voice Assistant enable us to perform simple tasks like seeking directions, or making calls.

The earliest to the race of voice assistant was Apple's Siri, that came bundled with every iPhone 4s
device. But Amazon, Google and Samsung soon joined the race, with their own voice assistants to
power its mobile devices and their home automation devices.

In this detailed comparison, we pit 4 renowned voice assistants against each other to see which
performs real world tasks, beyond just calling and directions.

THE PROCESS

We performed the seven different voice tests, which includes Basic Maths, Device Control, Query
the Internet for basic info, control the third party apps, test the machine learning and artificial
intelligence (human factor), and set rourtines like remainders, alarm and so on.

Each device is awarded one point, if it does the task, irrespective of the time taken to execute the
task. In case the device, failed to execute or perform a task, no points were awarded.

BASIC MATHS
We tried with basic questions, viz. Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. All the
devices seemed to understand and respond to these basic maths questions.

But however, when asked to solve a problem, “How to split a bill of $100 among three of us?”
All of the voice assistants failed, except Alexa. Alexa seemed to solve this problem spot on.

DEVICE CONTROL

We tried to control a few smart device connected to our desks. All of the voice assistant proved to
be quite efficient, in turning on or off these devices.

To add to this, we tried few different scenarios as well, which included asking the devices to control
network and Wi-Fi, increase or decrease the screen brightness, taking a selfie, querying the battery
left.

All of the devices seemed to perform well, except Alexa, Alexa refused to query battery, or even
take a selfie. Alexa cant be blamed for this, because all the voice assistants are integrated with OS,
Alexa itself is not running natively on the OS.

Siri however, performed all the tasks well, except connecting to devices not licensed or approved by
Apple, still Apple earns a point for this.

INTERNET QUERIES
Next we assumed that we were involved in activities, that would keep our hands engaged, like
cooking or driving. We tried to ask a lot of questions that would require information from the
internet.

We started with few questions related to present weather, and predictions, all of them performed
well.

When we tried to hum a song and identify the song. All of them failed, except Google Voice
Assistant, thanks to the Google Voice Search capabilities as in Google Search web, it returned an
exact match each time we tried.

We moved on to further queries, like asking details about a celebrity, his upcoming stage
performances and so on. All of the Voice Assistants were able to give us details.

Next up was recipes, when asked to show recipes each of the Voice Assistants perfomed well.

Google Voice was able to return results and also organize them properly for viewing too.

The next task, was to connect the voice assisatants to a smart speaker, all of them performed
exceptionally well, and played songs well. The exception however was Bixby, which did not have
its own brand speakers, and had to connect to the any speaker via Bluetooth and did not offer the
same seamless connectivity as others.

THIRD PARTY APPS

This test, was performed to check how well the voice assistant was able to perform when it required
to use a third party app.

All of them were able to open Netflix to play a movie, and perform searches on web.

However, when it was turn to search Images from Cloud or Gallery, all of them failed, except
Google, which could not fetch images from a particular date, but all of them failed when asked to
identify objects in images. For example, when asked, “How many of my images have dogs in
them?”

Google and Siri, performed exceptionally well in messaging and IM, they could not only write
messages, but also place emojis precisely as well. However, Siri had an upper hand, it could not
only attend or place calls, but also hang up the phone call, when we said, “Hang up the phone!!”

All of them were able to place alarms and reminders with ease.

HUMAN FACTOR

This test was focussed on how well the voice assistant's AI and ML performed.

We started of with the question, “Who am I?”, or “What is my name?”

All of them were able to identify the device owner with ease.

Siri however, not only was identify the name, but also it could be trained how to pronouce a name
in the contact. Not a great deal, but however, it would come in handy when a name is tough.
All of the voice assistants were able to record a proxy name, for example, “Call me boss!”, request
were processed successfully, except Alexa, which could not understand what we meant.

All of them were able to tell jokes, and also based on genre, like, “Tell me a dad joke!!”.

We tried to tell the voice assistants that, “We had placed the key in cupboard!!”.

Siri and Google Voice were able to understand, and process this info. But Bixby and Alexa could
not record this piece of information.

ROUTINES
With Human Factor, done. We moved onto Routines. We tried to train the Voice Assistant for
various routine jobs to be performed. The first one of them was to tell them to “Turn on lights when
I am home after 6PM!!”

Siri and Google Voice were not only able to detect when I am home. They also greeted us with
“Welcome Home” voice messages, and turned on lights and devices as well.

However, when we trained the voice assistants to perform some tasks when the phone was
connected to the car. Only Bixby was able to play our car music playlist. All of the other voice
assistant failed at this task.

The next task, was to train the voice assistant to do some routine morning chores like showing the
weather, and news. This included some linked tasks, like when the alarm is dismissed these tasks
are performed. Or, when we say “Good Morning!!” to our devices. All of them performed well at
these tasks.

But Bixby had some hidden features, its APK could not only detect your habits, but also can
perform tasks when triggered. It can detect what games you play frequently, at a particular time. It
can also trigger alarm for you to open the game or application, it can also turn on the lights or

VERDICT

Google Voice Apple Siri Samsung Bixby Alexa

52 43 42 30

The winner clearly is Google Voice Assistant. Apple Siri and Samsung Bixby with nearly identical
scores take up second and third spots. The scores were identical to previous years, where Google
and Siri showed similar scores. The surprise however was Samsung's Bixby which closed the
margin so much to Apple Siri, with some useful improvements in its Voice Assistant.

Alexa has useful features when it comes to Home Automation, but it needs to improve its APK to
support third party devices better.

With that said, each of the Voice Assistant perfomed some specific task better than the other. But
when we speak about practicality and versatility, Google Voice and Apple Siri still are the best
choices to opt for.

USER REACTIONS

Siddharth Panda says “Great to see Bixby has come a long way from being unusable to a pretty
solid contender to Siri!”

Kawaii M4A1-S says "It's so crazy how far ahead google assistant is than every other assistant. I
love google assistant because it just works for 99% of things you ask it to do. Plus, google's
compatibility with smart home devices is just straight up insane. However bixby is pretty cool too
and it even has more up it's sleeve that it can do that I don't even think assistant can do. Also I use
bixby routines for a f*** ton of things, and it works flawlessly."

Will says "Little (pedantic) things I realised.

0:39
Amazon Alexa didnt exactly get the question right. It took "69 42" as "6942". (Probably would've
worked if you said something like 69 dollars and 42 cents)

Apple doesnt actually start the countdown to take the photo, but it does set the right time (Unless
that was a coincident) Edit: Thats the night mode timer.

2:40
Google's humming to song is actually quite incredible, tried it before non-ironically because I didnt
know the song but knew a tune from it.

5:16
Siri didnt play a song, just opened youtube.

6:31
Bixby failed to name the contact "New Dad", maybe a little pedantic."

Lightining_11 says "This is super impressive. Especially the fact that he can refer to previous
commands with pronouns (eg. "What is the new avenger movie called?", then "When is it coming
out?") without confusing all of them is mind-blowing to me."

Raj Parmar says "Bixby was fantastic at first, but I prefer Google Assistant because it's so much
simpler and more adaptable. I have morning and night routines that include turning on my rgb
lights, Philips bedside lights, any plugs and the fan, my PC if I've left it on."
