Put simply, the dominant feeling a myth conveys is: this is absolutely unique; it could not have
happened to any other person, or in any other setting; such events are grandios, awe-inspiring, and
could not possible (possibly) happen to an ordinary mortal like you or me. The reason is not so much
that what takes place is miraculous, but that is (that it is) described as such. By contrast, although the
events which occur in fairy tales are often unusual and most improbable, they are always presented as
ordinary, something that could happen to you or me the person next door (or me or the person next
door) when out on walk in the woods. Even the most remarkable encounters are related (presented) in
casual, everyday ways in fairy tales. Moreover, the ending in myths is nearly always happy in fairy
tales (this sentence is really confusing, maybe you wanted to say: ). For this reason, some of the
best-known stories found in collections of fairy tales don’t really belong in this category.

II. READING COMPREHENSION

SEEN PASSAGE

Gardner is careful to explain that intelligence should not be limited to the ones he has identified. He
believes that the eight, however, provide a far more accurate picture of human capacities than
previous unitary theories. Contrary to the small range of abilities that many standardized IQ tests
measure, Gardner’s theory offers an expanded image of what it means to be human. He also notes that
each intelligence contains several sub-intelligences. For example, there are sub-intelligences within the
domain of music that include playing music, singing, writing musical scores, conducting, critiquing,
and appreciating music. Each of the seven other intelligences also encompasses numerous components.

III. UNSEEN PASSAGE

Researches suggest that there are creatures that do not know what light means at the bottom of the sea.
They don't have either eyes or ears; they can only feel. There is no day or night for them. There are no
winters, no summers, no sun, no moon, and no stars. It is as if a child spent its life in darkness in bed,
with nothing to see or hear. How different our own life is! Sight shows us the ground beneath our feet
and the heavens above us - the sun, moon, and stars, shooting stars, lightning, and the sunset. It shows
us day and night. We are able to hear voices, the sound of the sea, and music. We feel, we taste, and
we smell. How fortunate we are!

IV. UNSEEN PASSAGE

Today’s scientists are making a tremendous international effort to find out more about the causes of
quakes and devise better methods of prediction and ways to protect people and their property against
them. Although they already know something of the causes and can identify earthquakes by
instruments, the exact causes are still being discussed. In fact, there are so many new findings, new
theories, and new methods of learning about the earth that geology is sometimes considered a science
in a state of revolution. In the light of new knowledge, old textbooks no longer tell the true story of the
earth. So it is with the story of earthquakes are due, mainly, to the fracturing of great masses of rock
many miles beneath the earth’s surface. Rock masses slip and slide along a plane of fracture, which is
called a fault. Great blocks of rock perhaps ten miles wide, may be moved bodily, and displaced as
much as fifty feet along the fault. It is easy to see why the earth above trembles, causing serious
damage to large areas.

V. Paraphrase the following paragraph (10pts)

SEEN PASSAGE

Many parents say, “I know what giftedness is, but I can’t put it into words”. This generally is followed
by reference to a particular child who seems to manifest gifted behaviours. Unfortunately, there are
many misconceptions of the term, all of which become deterrents to understanding and catering to the
needs of children identified as gifted. Let’s study the following statement: “Giftedness is that precious
endowment of potentially outstanding abilities which allows a person to interact with the environment
with remarkably high levels of achievement and creativity.” This statement is the product of a small
neighbourhood group of parents who took a comprehensive view of the concept of giftedness before
focusing on any attempt to define the gifted child. They though, first, that within giftedness is a quality
of innateness, and second, that one’s environment is the arena in which the gifts come into play and
develop. Therefore, they reasoned that the “remarkably high levels of achievement and creativity”
result from a continuous and functional interaction between a person’s inherent abilities coming with
birth, acquired abilities and characteristics.
