Assessment- Understanding the concept of mixing different tones of a colour, exploration of oil pastels and their final artwork.

ACTIVITIES
Review of Previous Learners investigated layering black and white pastels unto coloured pastels to create different tones, progressing from the lightest
Knowledge tone (mostly white) to the darkest tone (mostly black).

Starter / Introduction
(5mins) Share Learning and Lesson objectives with learners.
Whole-Class / ● Watch PPT on Paul Klee, A brief about him and a selection of of his work. (10mins)
● In groups of 4’s, discuss artist’s work ‘May Picture’ with the help of the ff guided questions (10)
Group / Paired -What does the artwork remind you of?
Activities -Mention at least 4 formal visual elements used by the artist in this work.
-identify a section of the artwork where the artist used different tones of the same colour.
-Can you identify any complementary colours used in this piece?
-what is the mood of the piece and why?

● Every group select one person to feedback to the class. (5mins)


● Demonstrate how to use viewfinder to learners
● Recap on layering and blending white and black pastels to create differents tones. (Get a student to demonstrate)
● Using the colour wheel, remind learners about complementary colours by demonstrating how opposite colours make each
other stand out. Opposite colours can add contrast and create depth.

Individual learner’s task (40mins)
1. Learner to select a session of the artist’s work that they find interesting by the help of a view finder.
2. Enlarge chosen section by carefully copying the shapes in a light pencil drawing first on an A5 sugar paper.
3. Attempt to recreate the different tones of colours using black and white.

● Create and discuss Success Criteria with learners (5mins)

Differentiated Extension Task


● More able learners to use a restricted palette focusing on warm or cool colours only to finish a strip.
● Less able learners could reproduce the section in tones of one colour.

More Able/ High Would be able to work independently, complete task with their work showing excellent oil pastel skill, ability to layer colours
Ability neatly and accuracy in getting the right tones from the artist’s piece. Would be able to use keywords learnt to talk about their
work.

Able / Medium Ability Would have finished their work, with their piece showing some ability to getting the right tones in the artist work. Would be able
to use some keywords in talking about their work.

Less Able / Low Ability


Would need assistance with blending the pastels and getting the right tone.

Plenary:
(5mins) Choose a couple of the students work and discuss it with the help of the success criteria that was set at the beginning of the
activity.
