Answer all questions.

Question 1 (25 marks)

a) A capacitor consists of two parallel plates with a total surface area of 10 cm2. The plates are
separated by 0.5 mm of ceramic with relative permittivity of 40. By using εo = 8.85 x 10-12 F/m, given
that 10 nC charge is stored in the capacitor, determine the:

i) capacitance, C of the capacitor in pF. (4 marks)

ii) voltage applied across the capacitor, V. (3 marks)

iii) energy stored in the capacitor, W. (3 marks)

b) Three capacitors with the capacitances of 2 µF, 5µF and 8µF are connected in parallel across a
10_V supply. Determine the:

i) total capacitance, CT. (3 marks)

ii) total charge, QT. (3 marks)

iii) charge stored in 5 µF capacitor. (3 marks)

iv) capacitance that must be connected in series with the total capacitance in part (i) if the total
charge in the circuit now is 100 µC. (6 marks)

Question 2 (25 marks)

a) A 400 mm long conductor carries a current of 15 A and is at right angles to a magnetic field between
two circular pole faces. The total flux between the pole faces is 0.8 mWb. Determine the diameter
of the pole face if a 0.5 N of force is exerted on the conductor. (8 marks)

b) A mild steel ring has a mean length of 0.16 m and a cross-sectional area of 20 cm2. A coil is wound
around the ring and has 400 turns. The magnetic flux of 0.4 mWb is produced with a field intensity
of 200 At/m when the current is flowing along the coil. Given that the permeability of vacuum,
µo_=_4π x 10-7 H/m, determine the:

i) current, I required to develop the magnetic flux. (3 marks)

ii) magnetic flux density, B. (3 marks)

iii) permeability, µ and relative permeability, µr of the material. (5 marks)

c) State the equation of Faraday’s Law. Then, derive the equation of inductance of a coil, L in terms
of magnetic flux, 𝜙. (6 marks)
