PABLO PICASSO

Cubism is a style of art that emphasises abstract structure over other pictorial features,
particularly through showing multiple sides of the same thing at once and fragmenting the
form of objects being portrayed.

Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and theatre
designer who spent most of his life in France. Pablo Picasso was born on the 25th of October
1881 in Málaga, Spain, and passed away on the 8th of April 1973 in Mougins, France.
Pablo’s full name was Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los
Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso. Pablo Picasso was the son of a
drawing professor José Ruiz. His interest in drawing began around the age of 10 after
moving to A Coruña in 1891. The family then moved again to Barcelona during autumn in
1895 where Pablo entered a local art academy. In 1897 his painting Science and Charity, for
which his father modelled for the doctor, was awarded an honourable mention in Madrid at
the Fine Arts Exhibition.

Picasso was driven to give his figures more structure by a mix of inspirations, including
Paul Cézanne, Henri Rousseau, and primitive and tribal art, which finally led him to
Cubism, in which he dismantled the perspective conventions that had dominated painting
since the 1500. Picasso wanted to highlight the difference between reality and a painting.
Different ways of observing the world around us are used in cubism. Picasso used both his
memories and his observations to create a Cubist image because he believed in the concept
of relativity. Picasso used imagination as a technique to create abstract artworks that
explored form and structure. Picasso used colours and brush strokes to give texture to his
figures which he broke down into geometric shapes. He built paintings in layers and used
colour to section the shapes of objects.

I like that Picasso’s work is different and that he was determined and inspired to create
something new and abstract which made him one of the most famous artists to ever live. I
personally wasn’t the biggest fan of his work because I didn’t understand it and didn’t get
the technique or what exactly was happening in the artwork, I wouldn’t say I’m a fan now,
but I admire his work because it is different and new. He once quoted “Others have seen
what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not. ” ― Pablo
Picasso, Pablo Picasso: Metamorphoses of the Human Form: Graphic Works, 1895-
1972. This quote talks about how he went and tried something that didn’t exist and started
a whole new art technique.

Pablo Picasso inspired me to be determined and even if you struggle at first, you should
still keep going because it will be worth it at the end. He also inspired me to try new things
because it could be the best thing you ever do, and that if you really want to do it don’t let
anything stop you because no matter what some people say it really could be a life changer.
