GEN CHEM QUIZ#1

1. In your own words, explain how Dalton supported his atomic theory using the
fundamental laws of matter.

-the fundamental laws of matter is a brief statement summarizing observations,

therefore dalton’s theory attempts to explain the “why” behind what we or the
scientist observed.

2. What are isotopes? Cite at least two (2) examples of isotopes and explain their
importance and applications.

-Atoms with different numbers of neutrons but the same number of protons are called
isotopes. Considering the above, it becomes clear that isotopes are elements with the
same atomic number but different mass numbers or atomic masses. Based on
research, one example of an isotope is Cobalt-60(Co), an industrial and medical
application of a radioactive cobalt isotope. Medically, Co-60 is implanted as a
radiation source or used as an outside source in radiation therapy. The second
example is the Sodium-24(Na). In the medical field, Sodium-24(Na) is used as an
electrolyte tracer to monitor sodium uptake and determine if it is within normal
ranges.S
