In our day to day living, communication plays an important part. We use words to
express our ideas, thoughts and feelings. We express our ideas either through oral
or written. But whatever mode we use, familiarity to words define our understanding.
And one step to gain more words is through the use of a dictionary.

This module will provide you with varied activities to help you familiarize and use
the different tools in getting the meaning of unfamiliar words or the words that you
don’t understand. These tools will also improve your vocabulary skills. Remember, a
wide vocabulary is a good tool in becoming a good reader, a writer and a speaker.

In getting the meaning of a word we can make use of the following resources:

dictionary thesaurus online resources

A dictionary is a reference book that contains alphabetically arranged words or

words that are arranged from A-Z with their meanings. It also gives information about
grammar, pronunciation and other details about the listed words. Here is a sample page
of a dictionary.

gatekeeper guide words gauge

first guide word

second guide word

https://staardictionaries.com/high-school/

The pair of words on the topmost part of a dictionary is called the guide words.
The first guide word found on the left is the first word on the page while the second
guide word is the last word on the page. All the words listed on a dictionary are called
entry words. These words are usually written in bold and are arranged alphabetically.
Now, let us take a closer look at an entry word to know its different parts.

https://www.slideserve.com/guinevere-ashley/parts-of-a-dictionary
Each entry word has the following information:

Pronunciation - This is separated into syllables and tells you how to

pronounce the entry word;
Parts of Speech - This abbreviation tells you what part of speech the
define word is.
adverb (adv.) noun (n.)
adjective (adj.) preposition (prep.)
conjunction (conj.) pronoun (pron.)
interjection (interj.) verb (v.)

Definition - This explains the meaning of the entry word. If there is more
than one meaning, the definition is divided by numbers. Some
dictionaries also provide an example sentence to make the
meaning clearer.

In our example above, the entry word is mountain. Its part of speech is noun
and it has two definitions given: a large area of land that rises to a great height and a
large pile or amount.

Now, how will you know that a certain word belongs to a certain page? Example,
can you find the word monkey on the page with the guide words mole – mountain?
First, you need to arrange the guide words and the given word in alphabetical order.
Just like as shown down below:

mole
monkey Since monkey comes between the guide words, then
mountain monkey is on the same page as mole and
mountain.

Knowing how to get the meaning of the word using the dictionary, is indeed a
great help in making you understand the word deeper and will lead you to better
understanding of what you are reading. So how do we get the meaning of a certain
word using a dictionary? Say for example, we are looking for the meaning of the word
enhance.

- First, you need to think of what letter the word begins with. In this case the word
enhance begins with the letter E.
- Turn the pages of the dictionary that starts for that letter.
- Next use the guide words at the top of each page and what you know about the
alphabet to help you find the word.
- Scan down until you find the word you are looking for.
- When you find the word, look at its meaning. If the word has several meanings,
decide which meaning you think fits in the sentence.
- Try that meaning in the sentence to see if it makes sense.

Next resource that we can use in getting the meaning of a word is a thesaurus. A
thesaurus is a book that gives the synonyms and antonyms of a word.
Synonyms are words with the same meanings like hot and warm, glad and happy,
fat and stout while antonyms are words with opposite meanings like hot and cold,
happy and sad, fat and thin.
Aside from synonyms and antonyms, a thesaurus also gives the meaning and part of
speech of a word. Here is an example part of a thesaurus.

https://www.slideserve.com/holli/using-a-thesaurus

Based on the given thesaurus, what are the words that you can use instead of
the word cold? Did you get chilly, cool, freezing, frosty or icy? If yes, you are right.
These words have the same meaning with the word cold.

In this modern time, online resources are also helpful in getting the meaning
and the information needed in order to understand unfamiliar words. Search engines
like Google or Yahoo can be use. You can also directly go to www.dictionary.com or
www.thesaurus.com .

An internet connection is needed to access these sources. Just like what the
dictionary and thesaurus provide, online sources give the same information. Images and
related videos to the word can also be accessed online

Just type here the word you are looking

for then click enter. All the things you
want to know about the word will come
out on your screen.
