Using the Dictionary:
If you come across a word you don't know, and
you can't figure out its meaning from the
context, it's time to use a dictionary. Here are
some tips:

Check the Preface: The preface of a dictionary


explains what symbols and abbreviations mean.
Understanding these will help you navigate the
dictionary better.
Using the Dictionary:
Read All Definitions: A good dictionary will list
all possible meanings of a word. Don't stop at
the first one. Keep reading until you find the
meaning that makes sense in the context.

Look for Prefixes: If the word has a prefix like


un- or mis-, you might need to look up the
root word too.

Other Parts in Dictionary:
Guide Words: These are at the top of
dictionary pages and help you quickly find
the word you're looking for by showing the
first and last words on that page.

Main Entries: These are the words


explained in the dictionary, shown in bold
type.
Other Parts in Dictionary:
Parts of Speech: The dictionary uses
abbreviations like n. for noun and v. for verb to
show what type of word it is.

Restrictive Labels: These tell you if a word has a


special meaning in a particular field or region.
Example:
Subject Labels: mus. for music: Indicates a word's
specialized meaning in music, like "forte."
Other Parts in Dictionary:
Usage Labels: slang: Denotes informal
language, like "gonna."
colloquial: Marks words common in casual
speech, like "kids."
dial.: Specifies regional dialect usage, like
"soda.“

Geographic Labels: N.E. for New England: Shows


the term applies to this region, like "bubbler."

Using the Thesaurus:
A thesaurus helps you find synonyms
(words with similar meanings) and
antonyms (words with opposite
meanings).
Dictionary Form: If your thesaurus is in
this form, you just look up the word like
you would in a dictionary.
Traditional Form: If you have a traditional
thesaurus, start by looking up the word in the
index at the back.

Using the Internet: The internet is a great


resource for finding information, including
dictionary and thesaurus definitions. You can
also download dictionary apps on your
smartphone for quick access.
For example: Merriam-Webster Dictionary and
Oxford-Dictionary of English.
