V. SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 18:1-8 (NABRE)

(Note: Please ask everyone to stand while reading the Gospel.)

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

Then he told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without
becoming weary. He said, “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God
nor respected any human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and
say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’ For a long time, the judge
was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor
respect any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just
decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.’” The Lord said, “Pay attention to
what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones
who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will
see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he
find faith on earth?”

STORYLINE

(NOTE: The Speaker can use the storyline to better explain the Gospel to the kids.
Be creative! It may be delivered interactively through photos or role-playing.)

One day, Jesus told His disciples another parable. The story is about the judge
and the widow. Do you know what a judge is? (Let them respond) A judge is a
person who decides in a court.

How about a widow, do you know what a widow is? (Let them respond) A widow
is a woman whose husband has already died.
Jesus tells this story to teach us that we should never get tired of praying.

The story starts with a judge who is rude and strict. He is only concerned with
money and not helping the poor.

One day, a poor widow was cheated by a bad man. She wanted justice for
herself, so she went to the judge.

She was so poor that she cannot pay the money that the judge asked of her.
But, she did not give up hope. She asked the judge to punish the bad man who
cheated her.

When the judge refused, she disturbed him day and night until he finally agreed
to what she wanted.

Then Jesus said to them that we must never lose heart while praying. God, who
loves His children, will answer those who always ask from) Him.

VI. JUNIOR KIDS ACTIVITY: NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SURRENDER

Materials:

- Print out the ‘Connect the Dots’ sheet (See Appendix 1)

- Pen/pencil
- Coloring materials

Instructions:

1. Give each kid a ‘Connect the Dots’ sheet and a pen/pencil.

2. The kids will trace the drawing by connecting the dots starting from the number
1 to the last number.

3. After connecting the dots, give time for the kids to color and design the picture.

VII. PEPTALK

1. Did you enjoy doing the activity? (Let them respond.) Did you find it easy? (Let
them respond.)
2. In the Gospel story, Jesus reminds us, like the widow, that we should never lose
hope in prayer. Like in the activity, even if we get lost in connecting the dots we
should continue to find the right path and never lose hope.

3. Likewise, we should always choose to pray whatever the situation we are in:
a. Before going to sleep, you feel so tired because of your homework, will you
still pray?
b. During lunch, you are very hungry because of the lessons, will you still pray?
c. If you feel that the Lord is not listening to your prayers because it has not
been answered yet, will you still pray?
d. If your friend did something wrong to you, will you still pray for him?
e. Your parents requested for a family prayer but you want to play with the
gadget, will you obey and pray?

VIII. SUGGESTED SONG: NEVER STOP LOVING

IX. FEATURED SAINT: Saint Francis of Assisi

Feast Day: October 4

 Saint Francis was born in 1181. He was a son

of a rich family. Francis lived a sinful life.

 He was a knight and was held captive during

the war but was released. Do you know what
is a knight? (Let them respond.) A knight
is a warrior who protects the king and
the kingdom from enemies.

 One night, on his way to another battle, he

had a dream in which God told him to go
home because what he is doing is wrong.

 He went back home and since then he gave

up his riches and started to live a life of
poverty and spent more time in prayer.

 One day while he was praying, he heard Christ speaking to him, “Francis, repair my
Church”, at first, he thought Christ was talking about the ruined church where he was
praying. He then realized that Jesus was talking about His people,

 He was famous for his teaching in leading the people back to Christ. He also talked to
animals and they listened to him attentively.
 He was also known because of his love for the environment and animals,
addressing them as his brothers and sisters.

 He also received the “stigmata”, which are the marks of the wounds that
Christ suffered on the cross.

 Saint Francis is the patron saint of animals, ecologists, and merchants.

X. KFC Heroes Challenge: GDS 13 Mini Lecture on Stewards of God’s Gift.

 The service team will play the KFC Heroes Challenge chant. This is their signal to be a hero
and do the KFC Heroes Challenge.
 “St. Francis of Assisi is like a hero of the Catholic Church. We too could be like him and be a
hero. Do you want to be a hero like St. Francis of Assisi?”
 A hero is always prepared in every situation wherever we are needed. The KFC Heroes
Challenge today is to be stewards of God’s gift.
 But wait, before we continue, who among you here joined last month’s opening of the 13th
Global Day of Service? Can you still remember our theme? Yes! You’re all right!
 Our year-long 13 Global Day of Service is themed “Caring for our Common Home”. We will
th

take part in caring for our common home as KFC Heroes in living out our lifestyle. And now
we will get to know more about how we can be stewards of God’s gift! All right! Are you all
ready? Okay, let’s begin.
 Do you know what a steward is? Yes! A steward is someone who manages or
supervises money or property belonging to another or others.
 Do you know that we are all stewards? Yes! Not just ordinary stewards but we are stewards
of God’s Gifts.
 God created everything! Can you still remember the story of creation?
 Day 1: Light
 Day 2: Sky and Oceans
 Day 3: Dry ground & plants
 Day 4: Sun, moon & stars
 Day 5: Birds & sea creatures
 Day 6: Land animals & Humans
 Day 7: The Sabbath of rest
 YES! All of those are God’s Creation and God’s gifts to us and we are called to be good and
faithful stewards. We are all called to enjoy, protect and care, for all of God’s creation.
 We can become good stewards by knowing and using our 3 T’s! Our TIME, TALENT, and
TREASURE.
 First is TIME:
 Take care of your time - Value your time, do not waste it. Wasting of time is
when you:
 Wait for the deadline of a project before doing it.
 Excessive use of gadgets, watching TV, etc.
 Always be wise in using your time - It doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun, it’s
all about allotting time for your responsibilities and making time for your
priorities and hobbies. For Example:
 Study Time: When it’s study time, do not watch T.V. while doing so.
Focus on it so that you will finish your assignments in time.
 Family Time: If it's time to be with your family, don’t play with your
gadgets, talk to your parents or with your siblings.
 Time for playing and time with your friends.

You can list more of the things that you want to spend time with.
Remember, you can never bring back the “time” that you spent. Use it wisely.
 Give time to those who need it - Share your time with others. We can give our
time to help others.
 When our classmates find it hard to understand the lesson, we can give
our time to teach them.
 If you see your classmate who is always alone, you can reach out and try
to befriend them.
 Second is TALENT:
 All of us have talent given by God
 We are blessed with talents, some for the performing arts, academics,
sports, or in dealing with people, animals, and many more. (Ask the kids
and families what their talents are, and wait for them to respond.)
 Our talents have a purpose
 We must realize that our talents are not for our satisfaction only. Our
talents are to be nurtured and developed. Our talents have unlimited
potential that will lead us to become a better person.
 Talents should only be used for good, it must not hurt or humiliate
others. Never compare your capabilities with others. We are all unique.
 Our Talents were given to bless others
 Our talents are to be shared with others. We must develop our talents
so that our talents can inspire other people. We can also help others to
develop their talents.
 When seen by people, our talents can give joy to them and can also be
an inspiration.
 Third and last is TREASURE:
 Our “Treasures” are the things that we have which were given to us by our
parents and other loved ones. How can we be good stewards of these
treasures?
 Be grateful. Do not forget to say thank you.
 If you have things that are old or broken, do not throw them away
immediately, check first if it can still be fixed (Ask for help from your
parents).
 If you have some things that you are not using anymore (but still in good
condition) consider giving them to those who might need them.

 Let us remember that all the things that we have now, especially our Time, Talent, and
treasure are all given to us because God loves us. And He knows that we will use it in a
good way.
 In being good stewards of God’s gifts, we will be able to contribute to taking care of our
Common Home, the Earth.
 Let us practice and share this at home, in school, and with all our friends
XI. TAKE HOME ASSIGNMENT: HOLY ROSARY PRAYER

the Holy Rosary. (See Appendix)

XII. PARENTS FORUM (Print out as Hand Outs for Parents)

• Today, our children were taught about being persistent in prayer. They are
reminded to always pray to God even in hard times.

• When we pray as a family our greatest model is our Mother Mary. She is the
person who constantly pondered Jesus’ words in her heart and gives praises to
Him every day.

• Like Mary, we are to give praise to Jesus and lead our children to have a
relationship with Him. And one way of building a relationship with Jesus is to
know His life here on earth through the eyes of His mother, Mary.

• A prayer that shows Jesus’ life in the eyes of Mary is the Holy Rosary. So, that’s
why it is very important that we pray the Holy Rosary as a family, as our way to
know, love, and serve Jesus.

• the Rosary is a prayer for peace, and always has been, a prayer for the family,
and it certainly has brought them closer together. As Christian families, It is
important not to lose this precious inheritance. We need to return to the
practice of family prayer and prayer for families, continuing to use the Rosary.

• There are 12 tips for praying the Holy Rosary with the kids:

For Junior Kids:

 Skip the beads, or get kid-friendly ones.

If you’re praying with children too young to follow directions, say the
rosary without the aid of rosary beads. (Very young children may end up
whipping them around.) When your kids are old enough, purchase a
durable, kid-friendly rosary, such as a cord rosary.

 Start with one decade.

Praying one decade of the rosary should take a little longer than five
minutes. Be sure to introduce the mystery in advance; explain each
different mystery each time, so that you eventually work your way
through all mysteries.

• Shorten the decades.

Say the entire rosary, but only say three Hail Mary prayers for each
decade. This is a good way of introducing your children to the order of
the mysteries and the rhythm of the entire rosary; plan on spending
about fifteen minutes.

• Use pictures to aid meditation.

Find pictures illustrating each mystery of the rosary. Young children can
follow the rosary by looking at the pictures.

• Set a prayerful mood.

Before you begin the rosary, set the mood by singing a Marian hymn or
practicing silence before you begin.

• Ignore the kids and pray.

If your children act up while you’re praying, ignore them as best you can
and continue praying the rosary. Someday, your kids will grow into the
practice.

For Senior Kids. Along with the above, here are tips for your older kids.

• Make your own rosary.

Making their own rosary will help them appreciate praying with it. It’s
easy! And they will enjoy praying with you in knowing the use of what
they have made.

• Introduce the rosary as a form of meditation.

Allow your kids to imagine each mystery in Jesus’ life.

• Pray the scriptural rosary.

Incorporate relevant scripture readings before each Hail Mary; for
example, the first joyful mystery would be internalized with lines from
Luke 1, taking the reader through the Biblical account of the
Annunciation.

• Pray with music.

Try praying with soft instrumental music playing in the background for
each mystery of the rosary.

• Get older kids and teens to lead.

Research shows that the more opportunity we give kids around religious
practices, the more likely they are to retain and integrate those practices
into adulthood.

• Pray the rosary for your kids.

If they will not pray the rosary with you, offer the rosary for them. As you
pray, focus on entrusting your kids to the intercession of Mary and the
care of her Son, and ask for the humility and grace you need to be a good
parent.

• Their Take Home Assignment this month is “HOLY ROSARY PRAYER”. This
assignment will be an avenue for them to practice the praying of the Holy
Rosary. This will also help them appreciate the intercession of Mother Mary in
our prayers.

• Aside from their assignment, let us also take time to discuss the FEATURED
SAINT of the month during our family time (Family Household). Please ask for
the intercession of the featured saint during your Family Prayer Time.
