I chose to appropriate the Man In a Bowler Hat because it wasn’t to hard, and it would allow me to

present a social issue that collates to todays society and has something to do with something that’s
‘hidden’. The original artwork portrays a man in a black bowler hat and suit, with a dove flying in
front of his face from his left to right, as if it had just flown in front as a photo was being taken. In my
version, I have changed the subject to a female, the bowler hat to a modern bucket hat, and the
object in front of the face to an iPhone being held by the girl in a classic ‘mirror selfie’ pose. I will use
either coloured pencils or paint, depending on which technique works the best to create the colours
as close ot the original as possible. My artwork aims to criticise the use of social media and the
pressures of it on the younger generation. The iPhone being in front of the girls face also shows and
emphasises the fact that young girls and boys tend to hide behind their social media in order to
show society the best versions of themselves and to deem themselves as acceptable by society. I
would say it criticises the drastic change in social expectations from social media that are prevalent
in today’s younger generation, by contrasting things like fashion choice, photos (selfies) and
jewellery with what is portrayed in the original artwork and what was popular at the time the
original was produced. I have challenged the way that people who were around when the original
artwork was made thought, dressed, and deemed as acceptable as a society, by sort of mixing the
two generational norms into one, almost bringing past trends into the present in the way that things
that are popular now are seen, like suits on women. My artwork is a sort of critique of todays
popularity and ‘trends’, but also a parody of the original artwork, as I changed the way its message
comes across to the audience by changing it to a more modern and relevant message.
