F1-F3 Fish Sir Extra Lesson Notes Set 1

Focus Points: → Gerunds, Bare Infinitives, To-Infinitives

→ Introduction to Past Perfect Tense / Review on Previous Tenses
→ Introduction to Question Tags and Rhetoric

We learnt about Gerunds and Infinitives in Form 1, yet in Form 2 and Form 3, these two grammar concepts
will become more advanced. Better for us to deal with the concepts in a much better way.

We commonly use gerunds:

1- After verbs that express likes/dislikes :

like love enjoy dislike hate don't mind can't stand can't bear

2- After prepositions :

Example: interested in … Instead of …good at ... before ... after ...

3-- After certain expressions : it's no use ... it's no good ... there's no point in ... I can't help... I don't mind...

4—Certain verbs (Refer to F1 Grammar 6—Gerunds and Infinitives)

As The zero (or bare) infinitive is used after verbs of perception (see, feel, hear), many auxiliary verbs (may,
should, must), the verbs make and let, and the expressions had better and would rather.
However, when it comes to using the to-infinitive, rather than simply tell you that most verbs can be used
We can use this to remember most of them

1. After verbs that refer to a future event, or a decision that you are prepared to make, or thought

want hope aim intend arrange attempt promise be determined plan consent

decide demand deserve determine endeavor expect offer proceed promise

threaten swear volunteer want would like would hate would love would prefer

2. After Adjectives
3. After "too" & "enough":
Example: "It's too difficult to convince him to be helpful."
" But it's easy enough to fool him to get what you want."

1. Remembrance

2. Completion/Incomplete Action

3. Actual/Potential
Introduction to Past Perfect Tense

What exactly is the Past Perfect Tense?

Think of it like this: We usually describe two past events.

The only difference is, we use the past tense for the event that happened sooner, and the one that happened
earlier than the other previous event, would be using past tense.

I had spoken to my parents before I drove home.

Event 1: Speaking to my parents

Event 2: Driving home

* One main criteria for past perfect tense, is that it would only be used in the past tense
context

Look at the following sentences and determine which should be switched to past perfect

1. I graduated in 2022
I started work in FWEDU in 2017

2. Edan released “Elevator” at 8:30 p.m.

He played two pranks on his fans before the release of his song.
3. Daniel bought his iPad
The new iPad was released the next day.

4. Mr Fish’s favourite teacher moved to Scotland before Mr Fish graduated.

Mr Fish graduated three years later

How do we determine when to use Past Perfect Tense in a mixed exercise?

Question Tags and Rhetoric

In both Form 1 and Form 2, Question Tags are very commonly-asked

Just think of the word “balance”, “yin and yang”, if you will.

We can add question tags like isn't it?, can you? or didn't they? to a statement to make
it into a question. One main point worth mentioning, is that…
question tags are more common in speaking than writing.

Example:

Remember, this is usually used as a form of confirmation.

What about Rhetoric?

Basically Rhetoric is a form of persuasive writing.

Since we are focusing on asking questions, our focus would be on Rhetorical Questions.

Take the following questions as example:

Who doesn’t want to live alone?

Do we really want me to die?
If you prick me, won’t I bleed?

My New Year Holiday

1 My parents took me to Ocean Park on Sunday. We usually go there on the first day of the
year as I really love going there. This year was no different.
2 We arrived there as soon as the park opened and went straight to Adventure Land. We
went on The Space Wheel, The Raging River and other rides. We got soaked on The Raging
River, but it was great. The weather was hot and sunny, so it was actually quite refreshing!
3 We had lunch in the Bayview Restaurant in Marine land. Then Mum and Dad had
secretly arranged for us to go on a Behind-The-Scenes tour. It was my favourite part of the
day. After that, we rushed to Ocean Theatre, where a show was just starting. I love to watch
dolphins doing tricks, so I really enjoyed seeing the show.
4 We missed out Headland Rides so we could visit the Giant Panda Habitat and other
attractions in Lowland Gardens. After that, we watched the SkyFair show. Then I had
another surprise-a ride on the SkyFair balloon. It was amazing-we floated a hundred metres
above the park! Afterwards we went to see the flamingos and other birds in Bird Paradise,
and we left just as the park was closing. It was a long day, but we all had a great time!
