REFLECTION OF LIGHT

Ray of light:
The light traveling in any one direction in a straight line is called a ray of light.
Beam of light:
A group of light rays given out from a source is called a beam of light
Reflection of light:
Bouncing back of a light ray after hitting a surface.
Incident ray:
The light ray which strikes the surface.
Reflected ray:
The light ray which returns from the surface after reflection.
Normal:
An imaginary line perpendicular to the surface passing from the point of incidence
Angle of incidence :
The angle between the incident ray and the normal to the surface is called angle of incidence
Angle of reflection:
The angle between the reflected ray and normal to the surface is called the angle of reflection.

Laws of reflection:

1. The first law of reflection states that the incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal
to the surface of the mirror, all lie in the same plane.
2. The second law of reflection states that the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of
incidence. Both angles are measured with respect to the normal to the mirror.
REFRACTION OF LIGHT

Refraction of light: Notes

Medium: The material that light passes through is called a medium. Air, glass and water are
examples of medium.
-Speed of light is maximum in vacuum, then in air, then in liquids and least in solids.
-speed of light in air= 3 x 108 m/s= 3 x 105 m/s.
Refraction of light:
Bending of light when it travels from one medium to another medium. This happens because
of the change in speed of light when it travels from one medium to another medium.
Incident ray:
The light ray which strikes the surface separating two medias.
Refracted ray:
The light ray emerging out in the second medium.
Normal:
An imaginary line drawn perpendicular to the surface separating two medias.
Angle of incidence :
The angle between the incident ray and the normal to the surface separating two medias is
called angle of incidence
Angle of refraction:
The angle between the refracted ray and normal is called the angle of refraction.
