PAINTBALL

1. Introduction

Paintball is a competitive team shooting sports in which players eliminate opponents from
play by hitting them with spherical dye-filled capsules called paintballs that break upon
impact. Paintballs are usually shot using low-energy ai weapons called paintball markers that
are powered by compressed air and were originally designed for remotely marking trees and
cattle.

2. History

The game was invented in May 1981 in New Hampshire by Hayes Noel and Charles Gaines.
A debate arose between them about whether a city-dweller had the instinct to survive in the
woods against a man who had spent his youth hunting, fishing, and building cabins. The two
men chanced upon an advertisement for a paint gun in a farm catalogue and were inspired to
use it to settle their argument with 10 other men all in individual competition, eventually
creating the sport of paintball.

3. Types

 Speedball is played in an open field, it is flat with a minimum of natural obstacles,

and sometimes artificial turf is used, especially in indoor fields. The first speedball
fields were constructed with flat wooden obstacles staked into the ground to provide
cover but later smaller obstacles made from plastic drainage pipe were used. This
style of play was often referred to as "Hyperball".
 Woodsball, or "Bushball", is a fairly recent term that refers to what was the original
form of the game where teams compete in a wooded or natural environment, in which
varying amounts of stealth and concealment tactics can offer an advantage. The term
is commonly used as a synonym for specialized scenario-based play, but it technically
refers to any form of paintball played in fields primarily composed of natural terrain
and cover such as trees and berms, instead of manmade obstacles.
 "Paintball Scenario" refers to a game where tasks are given to each side at timed
intervals. Pioneered by Wayne Dollack, "Scenario Paintball" focus much more
heavily on Live Action Roleplaying events, elevating their immersion, storyline, and
game play mechanics above the paintball aspect of play. Many variations and
combinations of these games are currently played and are unique to each event and
event producer. The game uses the entire venue it is at, combining all normal gaming
fields into 1 large playing area.

4. Dimensions

 “Playing-field is defined as being a flat, level area, surfaced to minimize injury and
completely surrounded by league approved netting to ensure safety. Usually these
dimensions are used across the globe:
M7: 150.9 x 124.67 ft, at least 35 obstacles

D7: 180.44 x 108.26 ft, at least 35 obstacles

M5: 180.44 x 65.6 ft, at least 25 obstacles

Obstacles will be placed a minimum of 4.9 feet off the boundary. The playing-field
boundary shall be marked clearly visible and will be placed a minimum of 4.9 feet
off the netting.

 The National Xball League (NXL) is the premier league for tournament paintball
across the United States and Europe. The NXL standard field size is 150x120 feet
with a grid of 10x10 feet.

The NXL 10-man field size is 200x150 feet. A start base must be 6.5 x 3.9 feet wide
and placed in the middle of the back boundary of the field. The playing-field
boundary shall be marked clearly and placed a minimum of 4.9 feet off the netting.
Obstacles should be placed a minimum of 4.9 feet off the boundary. The order of the
obstacles on the field should meet the official event llayout.

5. Materials

Natural grass is used for gameplays like woodsball where natural elements are
preferred. They can be of different types according to the climate of that area. Some
preferred choices are:

 Bermuda grass for hotter areas. It is beneficial for lower maintenance and high
traffic.
 Bimini grass for colder regions and is beneficial for resistance to drought, limits
insects and diseases and also have fast injury recovery.

Although natural grass is an option, artificial turf is still preferred for indoor and
outdoor gameplays.Synthetic lawns used for paintball is engineered to be lightweight
for easy performance. The type of synthetic grass used for paintball surfaces are
usually made from either nylon, polyethylene, or a combination of both.

 Action Turf allows for faster, more exciting action. The second advantage of action
turf is that it allows for faster, more agile movement, allowing for more exciting
games and more precise movements from players.
 Money Turf is the only turf that has been researched and proven for paintball use.
Money Turf Bronze Plus is a favorite with indoor fields for paintball because of it's
easy cleaning. Balls and shells can be easily swept or blown away. The blade length is
just a hair under 1" which allows for a real grass feel and easy cleaning.
