CL 12 - Liturgical Season Practices

CHRISTMAS
Christmas is a time when Christians commemorate the birth of Jesus. It culminates with the
Epiphany and features the Holy Family and Mother of God Feasts.
- Simbang gabi : as early as 4am , people go to church to hear mass starting from December 16
all the way to christmas eve (dec, 24).
- Noche Buena : Christmas Eve, after hearing mass, people will prepare meals to celebrate and
feast at midnight.
- Nativity Scene : Filipinos will create a Nativity Scene in their homes; Baby Jesus with Mary and
Joseph along with the 3 Magi with animals in the scene.
EPIPHANY
Epiphany is a Christian celebration that principally honors the Magi's visit to the infant Jesus and
John the Baptist's baptism of him.
- Three Magi : (3) Men will dress up as kings and ride horses instead of Camels, and will make
their way to the church, as they do so, they will give gifts to children on the streets.
- Mass and Feast : To celebrate the (3) Magi on their 12 Day Journey, Filipinos will go to church
and afterwards prepare a feast in their homes.
LENT
Fasting and Easter-related preparations take place during the Lenten season. It's a moment to
consider Jesus' death and to get in the mood for Easter. Ash Wednesday marks the start of
Lent, which lasts 40 days.
- Ash Wednesday : Ash from Palm Sunday Celebrations placed on the foreheads in shape of a
cross as a sign of repentance.
- Fasting and Abstinence : A practice to remind us of Jesus’ sacrifices, Filipinos will refrain from
eating meat or from eating food at all.
- Stations of the Cross : People will participate in the 14 stations of the cross that lead to the
crucifixion and death of Jesus.
EASTER
From the Sunday of Jesus' Resurrection to Pentecost Sunday, the Easter season lasts fifty
days.
- Visita Iglesia : On Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, which is regarded as one of the most
popular ceremonies while recalling Christ's crucifixion, Filipino Catholics attend seven churches.
- Easter Sunday : Jesus has risen from the grave, thus this is a time to celebrate. On this day,
shops reopen, allowing Filipinos to stock up on supplies for the feast. Now, meat is available to
Filipinos.
- Salubong : Men lead two separate processions carrying the statue of Christ, while women follow
the image of a distraught Mary dressed in a black mourning robe. The mythical meeting of the
rising Christ and his mother is portrayed in the aforementioned liturgy.
