Sensible Heat

• Sensible heat changes the temperature when it is

added or removed
• Adding sensible heat increases temperature and
removing sensible heat decreases the temperature

Latent Heat

• Latent heat changes the state of the substance when

it is added or removed
• Change of state

Calculating Sensible Heat

• Sensible heat = m c Δ T
m – mass in kg
c – specific heat capacity kJ/kg.k
Specific heat capacity equals 4.187 kJ/kgK, 2.108 kJ/kgK,
1.996 kJ/kgK for water, ice, and water vapor respectively.

Δ T – Change in temperature

Calculating Latent Heat

• Latent heat = m. Lf or Lv
m – mass in kg
Lf or Lv – enthalpy of fusion or
enthalpy of vaporization
The heat of fusion for water at 0 °C is approximately 334kJ
per kg, and the heat of vaporization at 100 °C is about 2,230
kJ per kg.

latent heat
