1. George born on February 22, 1732 in a simple Virginia farmhouse.

2. At his birth, Virginia was an English colony.


3. His father died when George was 11 years old. George helped his mother run
their farm.
4. As a young boy, he liked to fish, go boating, and ride horses. His favorite subject
was math.
5. George’s father owned surveying tools, which George found. He liked surveying.
6. George joined the Virginia army in 1753.
7. The French and Indian War began in 1754, which the English won.
8. After this war, in 1758, George married a wealthy widow, Martha Custis.
9. King George the Third of England wanted the American colonists to pay the cost
of the French and Indian War, so he taxed them heavily.
10. The colonists were angry, and they refused to pay, so they dumped tea into
Boston Harbor instead of paying taxes on them.

12. In April, 1775, fighting began between the English and American colonies began
near Boston at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts.
13. One month later, leaders of the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia. George
Washington was chosen to lead the Continental Army.
14. Often there were not enough uniforms, food, blankets, and guns for George
Washington's soldiers.
15. The war lasted 8 years. In 1783, when the american colonies won the war,
George was a hero.
16. The 13 colonies became 13 states. They formed a government, but it was weak.
In 1787, a new government was formed with a congress, a supreme court, and a
president.
17. George Washington was elected the first president of the United States of
America in 1789. He was reelected in 1792.
18. President George Washington signed treaties with the Indians, Spain, and
England.
19. There was a war in Europe, but George kept the United States out of it.
20. In 1797, after 8 years as president, George Washington returned to his home at
Mount Vernon.
21. Each morning, he rode his horse across his large farm.
22. Sometimes he rode 15 miles north of Mount Vernon to watch the building of a
new city. It would be the capital of the United States, and it would be named after
him. It would be called Washington.
23. Then in 1799, George Washington became sick and died. He was sixty-seven
years old.
24. George Washington was a great leader. He has been called “the father of our
country”. People say that George was “first in war, first in peace, and first in the
hearts of his countrymen”.
I liked reading this book and I really like George Washington because he did
many important things, like leading the American colonies against the English, and
signing treaties with the Indians, Spain, and England. I learned that you should be brave
and stand up for yourself after reading this great biography about the “Father of Our
Country”.
