Siemens: S7-1500 Selection Guide

The SIMATIC S7-1500 is Siemens’ modular, top-of-the-line controller with a variety of CPU types and additional modules that support multiple
performance classes and applications with high processing speeds, integrated system diagnostics, and more. The S7-1500 is ideal for mid-size
to large-scale applications with high density I/O modules – 8, 16, or 32-count digital I/O modules and 4 or 8-count analog I/O modules are
available. The below steps provide a step-by-step guide in selecting the correct S7-1500 hardware configuration for any application.

Best Practice: Use Siemens TIA Selection tool for power budgeting: http://www.siemens.com/tstcloud
1. Select a CPU based on internal memory and on-board interface(s).
2. Select a memory card for the CPU.
3. Select any additional I/O modules required.
4. Select front connectors based on the “Required Front Connector” field in the I/O module selection table.
5. Select any communications modules required.
6. Up to 31 modules can be located on the main CPU rack. If additional or remotely located modules are required, add racks by selecting
an ET200MP interface module for each rack. Additional modules are added using the same steps as those for the main rack.
7. Profinet/Profibus cable and (2) Profinet / Profibus connectors are required to connect an ET200MP interface module to a CPU. The
cable and connector types are dependent on the types of interfaces on the CPU and interface module.
8. Select a system power module (PM) based on the total current consumption of the system.
9. Select a bus extension power supply (PS) when the total current consumption of the rack exceeds the power supplied to the backplane
by the CPU or ET200MP interface module. This usually happens after 8-10 modules have been added to the rack. Note the AWC Best
Practice above!
10. Select an S7-1500 mounting rail.
11. Select cables and use the programming software selection guide to select programming software, if required.
