 The Key to Paradise
The famous follower Wahb ibn Munabbih was once asked,
" Isn't the statement of la ilaha illa Allah the key to Paradise?"
‫اﻟﻌﻠم‬
He answered, "Yes, but every key has ridges. If you come
with the key that has the right ridges, the door will open for ‫واﻟﯾﻘﯾن‬
you.
Yet if you do not have the right ridges the door will not open ‫واﻟﻘﺑـــــول‬
for you." ‫اﻻﻧﻘﯾـﺎد‬
That is, the statement must meet certain conditions. ‫واﻟﺻـدق‬
These conditions are what will differentiate the person who
will benefit from his making of that statement from the one
‫واﻹﺧﻼص‬
who will not benefit from that statement, no matter how many ‫واﻟﻣﺣﺑﺔ‬
times a day he may have made that statement.

It is narrated on the authority of 'Uthman that the

Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said. He who died knowing
(fully well) that there is no ilah but Allah, entered
Paradise.

Knowledge that negates Ignorance
‫ﷲ ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ﻋﻠﯾﮫ وﺳﻠم‬
ِ ‫ﻗَﺎل َ رَ ﺳُول ُ ﱠ‬

ُ ‫ﻓَﭑﻋْ َﻠ ْم أَ ﱠﻧﮫُۥ َﻵ إِ َﻟ ٰـ َﮫ إ ﱠِﻻ ٱ ﱠ‬ " ‫ﷲُ دَ ﺧَ ل َ اﻟْﺟَ ﱠﻧ َﺔ‬

‫" ﻣَنْ ﻣَﺎتَ َوھ َُو ﯾَﻌْ َﻠ ُم أَ ﱠﻧ ُﮫ ﻻَ إِ َﻟ َﮫ إِﻻﱠ ﱠ‬
It is narrated on the authority of 'Uthman that the Messenger of
So, know that there is no ilah except Allah. Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said. He who died knowing (fully well) that there is
(Surah Muhammad : 19) no god but Allah entered Paradise.

‫ﷲ ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ﻋﻠﯾﮫ وﺳﻠم‬

Meaning of Taghoot
The word Tāghūt is general.
Any entity that transgresses the bounds set by Allah.
Anyone who arrogates to himself a position that is befitting only for
Allaah, and so is worshipped instead of Him, either by forcing others to
worship him or by accepting their willing worship. (Ibn Jareer)
So everything that is worshipped besides Allāh ‫ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬, while
being pleased with this worship, whether it is something
worshipped, someone followed, or someone obeyed.

contradicts the Law of Allah or changes Allah’s Law.
3. The one who judges by other than Allah’s Law.

5. The one who is worshipped while being pleased with it.

The Message of every Prophet

‫ُوﻻ‬
ً ‫َو َﻟﻘَدْ ﺑَﻌَ ْﺛﻧَﺎ ﻓِﻰ ُﻛل ﱢ أ ُ ﱠﻣ ٍۢﺔ رﱠ ﺳ‬
۟‫أَ ِن ٱﻋْ ُﺑدُوا۟ ٱ ﱠ َ َوٱﺟْ َﺗ ِﻧﺑُوا‬
َ‫ۖ ٱﻟطﱠ ٰـﻐُوت‬
We surely sent a messenger to every community,
saying, “Worship Allah and shun taghoot.”

Rejecting Taghoot is a must
ۚ‫ت‬
ِ ‫َﻓﻣَن َﯾ ْﻛﻔُرْ ﺑِﭑﻟ ﱠط ٰـﻐُو‬
‫َوﯾ ُْؤﻣ ِۢن ﺑِﭑ ﱠ ِ َﻓ َﻘ ِد ٱﺳْ ﺗَﻣْﺳَ َك‬
‫ﺑِﭑ ْﻟﻌُرْ َو ِة ٱﻟْوُ ْﺛﻘ َٰﻰ‬
So whoever renounces Taghoot and believes in Allah has
certainly grasped the firmest, unfailing hand-hold.

2. ‫واﻟﻴﻘﲔ‬ Certainty
Absoluteness of knowledge which negates doubt!

‫إِ ﱠﻧﻣَﺎ ٱ ْﻟﻣ ُْؤ ِﻣﻧُونَ ٱ ﱠﻟذِﯾنَ ءَ ا َﻣﻧُوا۟ ﺑِﭑ ﱠ ِ َورَ ﺳُوﻟِﮫِۦ ُﺛ ﱠم َﻟ ْم ﯾَرْ ﺗَﺎﺑُوا۟ َوﺟَ ٰـ َﮭدُوا۟ ِﺑﺄ َ ْﻣ َٰوﻟِ ِﮭ ْم‬
َ‫ﺻ ٰـ ِدﻗُون‬
‫َوأَﻧﻔُﺳِ ِﮭ ْم ﻓِﻰ ﺳَ ﺑِﯾلِ ٱ ﱠ ِ ۚ أ ُ۟و َﻟ ٰـٓ ِﺋ َك ُھ ُم ٱﻟ ﱠ‬
The ˹true˺ believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger—never doubting—and strive with
their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allah. They are the ones true in faith.

Messenger of Allaah - sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam - said: ‘I testify that none is worthy of worship in
truth except Allaah and that I am the Messenger of Allaah. There is no servant of Allaah who meets
Allaah with these two testifications, not doubting in them, except that he enters Paradise.’ (Muslim)

 ‫ٱﻟﻠ ُﻪ‬
َّٰ ‫ﴍوط َﻻ إِ َٰﻟ َﻪ إِ َّﻻ‬
3. ‫اﻟﻘﺑـــــول‬ Acceptance
Acceptance with the HEART and TONGUE
Acceptance that contradicts Rejection - (Radd)
Accepting ALL of the Quran and Sunnah

َ‫إِ ﱠﻧ ُﮭ ْم ﻛَﺎﻧ ُٓوا۟ إِذَ ا ﻗِﯾل َ َﻟ ُﮭ ْم َﻵ إِ َﻟ ٰـ َﮫ إ ﱠِﻻ ٱ ﱠ ُ ﯾَﺳْ ﺗَﻛْ ِﺑرُون‬

For whenever it was said to them ˹in the world˺, “There is no ilah except Allah,” they acted
arrogantly (As Safaat - 35)

Abu Talib : On his death bed, chose to follow the religion of his forefathers. Refused to say La ilha il Allah.
Heraclius - King of the Romans.. Had knowledge of it, seems to have belief in it ,but did not accept with the tongue.
Father of Safiyah bint Huyee : Recognized that Muhammas s is the last Prophet as told in their scriptures, but
refused to accept him as the last Prophet and to accept Islam.

Heraclius said to his translator:,

“Tell him, I asked you about his family and your reply was that he belonged to a very noble family. In fact all the Prophets ‫ ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ﻋﻠﯾﮫ و ﺳﻠم‬come
from noble families amongst their respective peoples.

I questioned you whether anybody else amongst you claimed such a thing, your reply was in the negative. If the answer had been in the
affirmative, I would have thought that this man was following the previous man’s statement.

Then I asked you whether anyone of his ancestors was a king. Your reply was in the negative, and if it had been in the affirmative, I would have
thought that this man wanted to take back his ancestral kingdom.

I further asked whether he was ever accused of telling lies before he said what he said, and your reply was in the negative. So I wondered how a
person who does not tell a lie about others could ever tell a lie about Allah.

I then asked you whether the noble people followed him or the weak. You replied that it was the weak who followed him. And in fact all the
Prophets have been followed by this very class of people.

Then I asked you whether his followers were increasing or decreasing. You replied that they were increasing, and in fact such is the way of true
faith, until it is complete in all respects.

I furher asked you whether there was anybody who, after embracing his religion, became displeased with his religion and discarded his religion.
Your reply was in the negative, and in fact this is (the sign of) true faith, when its delight enters the heart and mixes with it completely.

I asked you whether he had ever betrayed. You replied in the negative and likewise the Apostles never betray.

Then I asked you what he ordered you to do. You replied that he ordered you to worship Allah and Allah alone and not to worship any thing
along with Him and forbade you to worship idols and ordered you to pray, to speak the truth and to be chaste.

If what you have said is true, he will very soon occupy this place underneath my feet and I knew (from the scriptures) that he was going to
appear but I did not expect that he would be from you (your people), and if I knew I could reach him, I would go out of my way to meet him and
if I were with him, I would certainly wash his feet.’

 ‫ٱﻟﻠ ُﻪ‬
َّٰ ‫ﴍوط َﻻ إِ َٰﻟ َﻪ إِ َّﻻ‬
3. ‫اﻟﻘﺑـــــول‬ Acceptance
Entering Islam perfectly means accepting everything that it offers. It means doing that which is
permitted and staying away from the prohibitions. It means living as the slave of Allah subhanahu
wa ta’ala and not as the slave of our desires.

‫ى ﻓِﻰ ٱﻟْﺣَ ﯾ َٰو ِة‬

ٌ ۭ ْ‫ض ۚ َﻓﻣَﺎ ﺟَ زَ آ ُء ﻣَن َﯾﻔْﻌَ ل ُ ذَٰ ﻟِ َك ﻣِﻧ ُﻛ ْم إ ﱠِﻻ ﺧِز‬ ۢ ٍ ْ‫ب َوﺗَﻛْ ﻔُرُونَ ِﺑﺑَﻌ‬ ِ ‫ض ٱ ْﻟ ِﻛ َﺗ ٰـ‬ ِ ْ‫أَ َﻓﺗ ُْؤ ِﻣﻧُونَ ِﺑﺑَﻌ‬
٨٥ َ‫ب ۗ َوﻣَﺎ ٱ ﱠ ُ ﺑِﻐَ ٰـﻔِلٍ ﻋَ ﻣﱠﺎ ﺗَﻌْ َﻣﻠُون‬ ِ ‫ﺷ ﱢد ٱﻟْﻌَ ذَ ا‬
َ َ‫ٱﻟ ﱡد ْﻧﯾَﺎ ۖ َوﯾ َْو َم ٱ ْﻟﻘِ َﯾ ٰـ َﻣ ِﺔ ﯾُرَ دﱡونَ إِﻟ ٰ َٓﻰ أ‬
Do you believe in some of the Scripture and reject the rest? Is there any reward for those who do
so among you other than disgrace in this worldly life and being subjected to the harshest
punishment on the Day of Judgment? For Allah is never unaware of what you do. (2:85)

َّٰ ‫ﴍوط َﻻ إِ َٰﻟ َﻪ إِ َّﻻ‬
4. ‫اطﺎﻋت‬/ ‫ اﻻﻧﻘﯾـﺎد‬Submission
To Submit to Allah and obey Him. This implies the actual physical enactment with
our deeds of our shahadah. In fact, this is one of the main meanings of the word Islam
itself, "the submission to the will and commands of Allah.” To practice it!

‫َوأَﻧِﯾﺑ ُٓوا۟ إِﻟ َٰﻰ رَ ﱢﺑ ُﻛ ْم َوأَﺳْ ﻠِﻣُوا۟ َﻟﮫُۥ‬

"Turn unto Him repentant, and surrender unto Him." 39:54

 Al Baqarah - Ayat 8

ِ‫َوﻣِنَ ٱﻟﻧﱠﺎسِ ﻣَن َﯾﻘُو ُل ءَا َﻣﻧﱠﺎ ﺑِﭑ ﱠ ِ َوﺑِﭑ ْﻟﯾ َْومِ ٱ ْﻟـَٔﺎﺧِر‬
And there are some who say, “We believe in Allah and the Last Day,”

٨ َ‫َوﻣَﺎ ھُم ِﺑﻣ ُْؤ ِﻣﻧِﯾن‬

yet they are not ˹true˺ believers.
 ‫ٱﻟﻠ ُﻪ‬
َّٰ ‫ﴍوط َﻻ إِ َٰﻟ َﻪ إِ َّﻻ‬
5. ‫ﺻـدق‬ Truthfulness
As opposed to hypocrisy (Nifaq) and dishonesty. This means that when we say

‫َو َﻟﻘَدْ َﻓ َﺗﻧﱠﺎ ٱ ﱠﻟذِﯾنَ ﻣِن َﻗ ْﺑﻠِ ِﮭ ْم ۖ َﻓ َﻠﯾَﻌْ َﻠﻣَنﱠ ٱ ﱠ ُ ٱ ﱠﻟذِﯾنَ ﺻَ دَ ﻗُوا۟ َو َﻟﯾَﻌْ َﻠﻣَنﱠ‬
َ‫ٱ ْﻟ َﻛ ٰـ ِذﺑِﯾن‬
We certainly tested those before them. And ˹in this way˺ Allah will clearly
distinguish between those who are truthful and those who are liars.

This means purity of action with a sound intention, free from any contamination of shirk. Only

٢ َ‫إِﻧﱠﺂ أَﻧزَ ْﻟﻧَﺂ إِ َﻟ ْﯾ َك ٱ ْﻟ ِﻛ َﺗـٰبَ ﺑِﭑﻟْﺣَ قﱢ ﻓَﭑﻋْ ُﺑ ِد ٱ ﱠ َ ﻣُﺧْ ﻠِ ًۭﺻﺎ ﱠﻟ ُﮫ ٱﻟدﱢ ﯾن‬

Indeed, We have sent down the Book to you in truth, so worship Allah ˹alone˺,
being sincerely devoted to Him.(Zumer - 2)
 ‫ ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ﻋﻠﯾﮫ وﺳﻠم‬- ‫ﷲ‬
ِ ‫ﻗَﺎ َل رَ ﺳُو ُل َ ﱠ‬

‫إِنﱠ أَﺧْ َوفَ ﻣَﺎ أَﺧَ ﺎفُ ﻋَ َﻠ ْﯾ ُﻛ ْم‬

(polytheism), showing-off (of good deeds).”

Anyone who arrogates to himself a position that is befitting only for Allaah, and so is
worshipped instead of Him, either by forcing others to worship him or by accepting their
willing worship. (Ibn Jareer)

1. ‫اﻟﻌﻠﻢ‬ KNOWLEDGE ‫ﷲ ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ﻋﻠﯾﮫ وﺳﻠم‬
ِ ‫ﻗَﺎل َ رَ ﺳُول ُ ﱠ‬

" ‫ﷲُ دَ ﺧَ ل َ اﻟْﺟَ ﱠﻧ َﺔ‬

ُ ‫ﻓَﭑﻋْ َﻠ ْم أَ ﱠﻧﮫُۥ َﻵ إِ َﻟ ٰـ َﮫ إ ﱠِﻻ ٱ ﱠ‬
So, know that there is no ilah except Allah.
(Surah Muhammad : 19)
‫" ﻣَنْ ﻣَﺎتَ َوھ َُو ﯾَﻌْ َﻠ ُم أَ ﱠﻧ ُﮫ ﻻَ إِ َﻟ َﮫ إِﻻﱠ ﱠ‬
It is narrated on the authority of 'Uthman that the Messenger of Allah (‫)ﷺ‬
said. He who died knowing (fully well) that there is no god but Allah
entered Paradise.

Rejecting the Taghoot ‫ﻛﻔﺮ اﻟﻄﺎﻏﻮت‬
‫ت‬
َ‫أَ ِن ٱﻋْ ُﺑدُوا۟ ٱ ﱠ َ َوٱﺟْ َﺗ ِﻧﺑُوا۟ ٱﻟطﱠ ٰـﻐُوت‬
Worship only Allah and reject the Taghut.
(An-Nahl 16:36)

‫إِ ﱠﻧﻣَﺎ ٱ ْﻟﻣ ُْؤ ِﻣﻧُونَ ٱ ﱠﻟذِﯾنَ ءَ ا َﻣﻧُوا۟ ﺑِﭑ ﱠ ِ َورَ ﺳُوﻟِﮫِۦ ُﺛ ﱠم َﻟ ْم ﯾَرْ ﺗَﺎﺑُوا۟ َوﺟَ ٰـ َﮭدُوا۟ ِﺑﺄ َ ْﻣ َٰوﻟِ ِﮭ ْم‬
َ‫ﺻ ٰـ ِدﻗُون‬
‫َوأَﻧﻔُﺳِ ِﮭ ْم ﻓِﻰ ﺳَ ﺑِﯾلِ ٱ ﱠ ِ ۚ أ ُ۟و َﻟ ٰـٓ ِﺋ َك ُھ ُم ٱﻟ ﱠ‬
The ˹true˺ believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger—never doubting—and strive with
their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allah. They are the ones true in faith.

Messenger of Allaah - sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam - said: ‘I testify that none is worthy of worship in
truth except Allaah and that I am the Messenger of Allaah. There is no servant of Allaah who meets
Allaah with these two testifications, not doubting in them, except that he enters Paradise.’ (Muslim)
 ‫ٱﻟﻠ ُﻪ‬
َّٰ ‫ﴍوط َﻻ إِ َٰﻟ َﻪ إِ َّﻻ‬
3. ‫اﻟﻘﺑـــــول‬ Acceptance
Acceptance with the HEART and TONGUE
Acceptance that contradicts Rejection - (Radd)
Accepting ALL of the Quran and Sunnah

َ‫إِ ﱠﻧ ُﮭ ْم ﻛَﺎﻧ ُٓوا۟ إِذَ ا ﻗِﯾل َ َﻟ ُﮭ ْم َﻵ إِ َﻟ ٰـ َﮫ إ ﱠِﻻ ٱ ﱠ ُ ﯾَﺳْ ﺗَﻛْ ِﺑرُون‬

For whenever it was said to them ˹in the world˺, “There is no ilah except Allah,” they acted
arrogantly (As Safaat - 35)

Abu Talib : On his death bed, chose to follow the religion of his forefathers. Refused to say La ilha il Allah.
Heraclius - King of the Romans.. Had knowledge of it, seems to have belief in it ,but did not accept with the tongue.
Father of Safiyah bint Huyee : Recognized that Muhammas s is the last Prophet as told in their scriptures, but
refused to accept him as the last Prophet and to accept Islam.
 ‫ٱﻟﻠ ُﻪ‬
َّٰ ‫ﴍوط َﻻ إِ َٰﻟ َﻪ إِ َّﻻ‬
4. ‫اطﺎﻋت‬/ ‫ اﻻﻧﻘﯾـﺎد‬Submission
To Submit to Allah and obey Him. This implies the actual physical enactment with
our deeds of our shahadah. In fact, this is one of the main meanings of the word Islam
itself, "the submission to the will and commands of Allah.” To practice it!

‫َوأَﻧِﯾﺑ ُٓوا۟ إِﻟ َٰﻰ رَ ﱢﺑ ُﻛ ْم َوأَﺳْ ﻠِﻣُوا۟ َﻟﮫُۥ‬

"Turn unto Him repentant, and surrender unto Him." 39:54
