RESEARCH WRITING PROCESS: THE LCBA WAY

This Research Writing Progress Monitoring Kit was designed to guide every researcher as well as
all individuals involved in the research process to guarantee that the vision-mission-objectives of LCBA
Research are carried out in their full extent. As such, the Research Development process in LCBA goes
through the important process: 1. Proposal Phase, 2. Data-Collection and Presentation/Reporting of
Results, and 3. Publication, Dissemination, and Utilization Phase.

During the Proposal Phase, the Proponent fills out a Research Concept Paper to the
Dean/Research Coordinator recommends the Concept Paper for Approval of the Research Director.
The Research Director assigns a research a Research Adviser while the proponent fills out a Research
Gantt Chart (Proposal) in agreement with the Research Adviser. The Research Director assigns a
Research Adviser assigns a Chairman and a Member of the Panel of Evaluators for Proposal
Presentation. After the Dean has assessed the readiness of the researcher, the researcher presents the
proposal. After the proposal presentation, the Chairman, the Member, and the Research Director fill
out a Summary of Research Proposal Suggestions and Recommendations. Likewise, the Panel of
Evaluators accomplishes the Evaluation Rubric for Research Project Proposal. After which, the
Research Ethics and Integrity Board approves the Proposal and Research Director gives his final
approval.

As soon as the Dean and Research Adviser attest to the readiness of the researcher to proceed
to the data-collection, the researcher is asked to accomplish a new Gantt Chart (Final Paper). Then,
the Chief Quantitative Data Analyst assigns a Statistician to assist the Researcher in the quantitative
aspects of the study; while the Chief Qualitative Data Analyst assigns a Qualitative Data Analyst to
assist in processing qualitative data of the study. Once the researcher has gathered, processed, and
analyzed the data, he/she presents the Findings, Conclusions, and Recommendations as well as
accomplish Evaluation Rubrics for the Final Presentation and the Manuscript.

After the researcher has incorporated all the suggestions and recommendations of the Panel
of Evaluators, the Research Director assigns a Content/Grammar Editor and Format Editor. The
formatted Research project is then recommended for binding. 3 copies of the hardbound Research
project along with three CD’s containing Microsoft Word format of the study are submitted to Research
Center. Based on the quality, novelty, and impact of the Research Project, the Research Director
recommends outstanding research for Institutional Refereed Journal Publication. The Researcher may
also submit his/her paper for peer/blind reviewing for International/National Paper Presentation and
Publication. Publication is deemed by LCBA as one of the most essential components of academic
life, hence, the mantra, “publish or perish.”

Proposed Titles of the Study
A. THE ROLE OF GUIDANCE COUNSELORS IN PROMOTING MENTAL HEALTH IN THE NEW NORMAL:
BASIS FOR GUIDANCE PROGRAM_________________________________________________________
Area/s of Study
Role of guidance counselors in promoting mental health in the new normal.
Background of the Study
The study aims to understand the roles of guidance counselor in promoting mental health in the new
normal and discover the different approach and techniques of the Guidance counselor in
promoting mental health awareness. Lastly, the goal of the research is to create a basis for guidance
program on promoting mental health to students in the new normal.
Central Question
What is the essence of the lived experience of guidance counselors in promoting mental health
among learners?
Corollary Questions
1. How do the guidance counselors describe their experiences as promoting mental health among
learners in the new normal?
2. What themes emerge from the testimonies of the guidance counselors?
3. Based on the findings of the study, what guidance program may be proposed?
Objectives of the Study
The primary objective of this study is to look into the lived experience of guidance counselors as they
encounter challenges in their role to promote mental health in the new normal and to know how
they overcome that challenges. Also, to create a basis for guidance program on promoting mental
health to students in the new normal.
Literature Review
We have all needed to adapt to new circumstances in our daily lives because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
That includes everything from commerce to our careers, but we can still support teens and young adults in
managing friendships and relationships, problem solving, decision making, and identifying and managing
emotions in this new paradigm. Guidance counselor should emphasize that students are not alone and provide
guidance and mentorship for anything in their realm of expertise: study skills, time management or handling
anxiety related to new digital learning and communication formats. Faculty members can create virtual drop-
in opportunities during the week for students to discuss problems or concerns around coursework, study,
academic or other challenges (MacPhee, 2020).

According to the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP,
2016), guidance counselors demonstrate the professional knowledge and skills necessary to promote the
academic, career, and personal/social development of all students through data-informed school counseling
programs. Guidance counselors are the leaders, advocates, and change agents within schools that have the
qualities for promoting mental health to students within the school setting.

According to the most recent American School Counselor Association (ASCA, 2016) Ethical Standards for
School Counselors, it is the role of the guidance counselor to conduct program evaluations to determine if
programming is effective and meets the academic, social, and emotional needs of students. An effective
mental health model involves regular monitoring of student and program outcomes to include reviewing
outcome data and analyzing the data to measure gaps, successes, and areas of limitations.

A guidance counselor occupies an important role during the global pandemic. That role is to listen to
students, help students transform their goals into actions and support students’ mental health during
challenging times. As a result of COVID-19, some schools may go in-person, go online and or use a hybrid
version, all three of which present challenges to guidance counselors (St. Bonaventure University, 2020).

The global pandemic has undoubtedly affected the way students approach their education. A
guidance counselor acts as an advocate for students’ well-being and academic advancement. These
professionals have the unique responsibility of paying attention to a student’s experience in school while also
questioning how their experience outside of the classroom influences their education and mental health (Ross,
2020).
Theoretical Framework
To understand and find meaning from the lived experiences of guidance counselors who work
with students to promote mental health in new normal, the researcher will use a hermeneutic

1
phenomenology approach for this research. Hermeneutic phenomenology is a philosophy used to
understand the lived experiences of a specific group of people.
According to Linda F. Peterson (2019) Phenomenology is also considered an inductive
qualitative approach rich in determining how we understand meaning (Miles, Francis, Chapman &
Taylor, 2013; Reiners, 2012). Hermeneutic phenomenology theory can be used when there is a
research to understand meaning in how others understand and apply sense to their world (Miles et
al., 2013).
The thought behind phenomenology is that reality is not set but is based on the varied realities
of the subjects (Reiners, 2012). This theory will allow the researcher and participants to engage in a
way that will help understand the lived experiences behind the phenomenon occurring when
guidance counselors promote mental health to students in new normal.
Proposed Methodology
Design: Qualitative Research____________________________________________________________________
Approach: Phenomenology_____________________________________________________________________
Locale: Selected schools in Laguna______________________________________________________________
Sampling Technique: Purposeful sampling________________________________________________________
Respondents/Participants: 10 Guidance Counselors in Laguna____________________________________
Delimitations: 10 Guidance Counselors of Junior High School learners in Laguna___________________
Data-Collection Method/s: Semi-structured interview guide_______________________________________
Questionnaire (put a check mark): ______Adopted ________Adapted ___________Researcher-made
Analysis:
First step, the researcher familiarized herself with the data, by reading through all the participant
responses several times. Second step, the study identified all statements in the responses that were
of direct relevance to the phenomenon under investigation. Third step, the study identified meanings
relevant to the phenomenon that arose from a careful consideration of the significant statements.
Forth step, the study clustered the identified meanings into themes that were common across all
responses. Fifth step, the researcher wrote a full and inclusive description of the phenomenon,
incorporating all the themes produced at the forth step. Sixth step, the study condensed the
exhaustive description down to a short, dense statement that captured just those aspects deemed
to be essential to the structure of the phenomenon. And lastly, the researcher returned the
fundamental structure statement to all participants (or sometimes a subsample in larger studies) to
ask whether it captures their experience.
