PART I
1. How did English Medium Education (EME) look before Covid 19 and how has
it changed since the shift to Flexible Learning?

Prior to COVID-19, English-Medium-Education (EME) in the Philippines

was a bit of a challenge for both students and teachers. During the pre-pandemic
period, learners, especially in public schools, were struggling to learn subjects with
English as a medium of instruction.
With the shift of education to flexible learning, changes can be noticed. Even
though the transition from face-to-face to online learning was difficult, learners and
teachers adopted the system, became familiar with it, and even found ways to
make it advantageous.
Flexible learning allows students to choose how, what, when, and where
they learn. Learners, using technology and the internet, can easily acquire
knowledge from different sources. They can learn at their own pace.
Hence, EME changed since the shift to flexible learning, as teachers now
have the help of parents and technology in educating the learners.

2. What challenges and opportunities for EME by the digitization of learning?

EME faced both challenges and opportunities as a result of the digitization

of learning. One challenge is the transition from face-to-face to online learning.
With no active physical participation from the learners, it is difficult to sustain or get
their attention with distractions around them, unlike when they are inside the
physical classroom.
Further, teaching any language online can be challenging as there can be
interruptions like poor internet connectivity and unwanted noises. Also, teachers
may have difficulties teaching beginning learners to write.
Nevertheless, these challenges can be seen as opportunities for teachers
and learners to look for new tools or resources to learn. Teachers can discover
new strategies and methods of teaching, while learners can acquire knowledge
independently or with minimal supervision, which will be beneficial to them in the
future.
How do you think internalization can support the perceived challenges and
opportunities?

Internalization can support the perceived challenges and opportunities by

providing teachers with free workshops or trainings on EME locally and abroad.
Also, foreign English-language educators should be given opportunities to provide
lectures and be part of developing the school's curriculum.

3. How is English-Medium-Education preparing students for the evolving

demands of the workforce and the shift to new ways of working?

English-Medium-Education is preparing students for the evolving demands

of the workforce and the shift to new ways of working by introducing them to the
English language as an international language for communication. And by instilling
in them how being proficient in English can be a symbol of power that could provide
social and intellectual mobility, and by promoting to them how professional
expertise in English will enable them to take leadership locally and internationally.
