Module 4: Writing the Position Paper

Activity 1

1. What is the opinion of the writer about technology?

(State the writer's position)
The writer is interested in technology developments and is sure that it will improve many people's
lives, but the same materials can also be used to advance evil and harm. Therefore, we need to be
reminded that technology is moral-neutral. It is still the heart of the person using it that matters. Use
technology for what matters most, and that is for the good – for everyone's sake.

2. Do you agree with the writer? Why? Why not?

(Helpful Tip: Useful Expression in agreeing or disagreeing with the views of others. I agree with the
writer's claim that… I don't agree with the authors ideas/thoughts… because…)
I agree with the authors ideas/thoughts it is indeed that we are using technologies by both hands and
sides, and we are enamored by the shiny metal things our world has continuously creating and
developing. However, using technologies for what matters more and for the good of everyone's sake is
agreeable because nowadays we shouldn't be expecting someone to do that as for expectations can
lead to disappointments, so as an individual, we should start it all by our own and other people or
user are able to imitate us or we are to influence them.

3. State the first argument of the writer?

The first argument of the writer is
The first argument of the writer is that technology is changing things. By being so enamored by all the
new gadgets and other shiny objects, sometimes, we can't help but scrape up lots of our money from
our hard-earned savings just to make sure we have them lest we lag behind. Therefore, even the way
the writer goes to sleep and the way the author wakes up from her/his sleep altered by technology.

4. What is the conclusion of the writer?

(Helpful Tip: Useful Expression in Drawing conclusion Using the work of others based on the writer, a
connection can be made between… or as a conclusion…)
Based on the writer, a connection can be made between we could and we should, or as a conclusion,
we need to be reminded that technology is moral-neutral. That it is still the heart of a person using it
that matters. And that we could or we should use technology for what matters most, and that is for
the good and for everyone's sake.

5. If you were to write a position paper what will be your stance about technology?
( Helpful Tip: Useful Expression in presenting your own point of view… I strongly believe that… I
think/contend that…)
I strongly believe that technology serves an enormous role for our current and past generations. In
that case, technology really did its job of making our lives at ease when needed.

Activity 2

Title: "Teenage pregnancy is a parents burden."

Main idea: The teenage years are also the years of confusion. That's why teenage pregnancy is still
timely. This becomes a burden not because of the baby, but because of the timing which the parents
didn't expect at all.
Reason/Evidence:
1. The poor become poorer because of it and sometimes end up lacking education to the children that
are not expected to come.
2. Parents are the ones who take responsibility for the baby.
3. Teenagers who were still studying during pregnancy tend to stop and just focus on their child.

Activity 3

Introduction: (In the introduction part you should capture the reader's attention, define the issue
given and state your claim.)

Social media is a tool that is becoming quite popular these days because of its user-friendly features.
Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and more are giving people a chance to
connect with each other across distances. In other words, the whole world is at our fingertips, all
thanks to social media. The youth are especially one of the most dominant users of social media. All
this makes you wonder that something so powerful and with such a massive reach cannot be all.
Social media has evolved as many years pass by. It has influenced people of different ages and places.
It influences people's lives, connections, and situations which can lead to a positive or negative way.
We can agree that it has helped many people in life, but we can't also deny the fact that social media
has a more negative impact on society, which we can consider that social media is a bane.

Body: (State three arguments then cite the evidence supporting your arguments)

When we look at the positive aspects of social media, we find numerous advantages. The most
important being a great device for education. All the information one requires is just a click away.
Students can educate themselves on various topics using social media. Despite having such unique
advantages, social media is considered to be one of the most harmful elements of society. If the use of
social media is not monitored, it can lead to grave consequences. It is harmful because it invades your
privacy like never before. The oversharing happening on social media makes children a target. for
predators and hackers. It also leads to cyberbullying which affects any person significantly. As social
media rises, cases of cyber-bullying have also increased. People nowadays use social media as a tool to
comment on other person's lives and bash the people they hate. Most people use dummy accounts to
attack a person or often use this platform to spread hate. Because of this, many people have damaged
mental health which leads to depression, anxiety, or suicide. Social media can also spread fake news
or false information. Although it is where people can get information or updates about what is
happening around the world we live in, they should still keep in mind that not all that they can see on
social media is accurate. People should be wise in reading or gathering information and should always
check the source. Every individual is connected online. It can build connections around the world for
they can meet new people but meeting other people through social media platforms can also cause
danger to that person considering the fact that he/she doesn't know that person yet. Also, it can affect
relationships between people who are near them, for it can disconnect them from the real world

Conclusion: (This part includes restating your claim, summarizing reasons, and explaining why your
stand/claim is worthy to read)

In short, surely social media has both advantages and disadvantages. But, it all depends on the user at
the end. The youth must particularly create a balance between their academic performances, physical
activities, and social media. Excess use of anything is harmful and the same thing applies to social
media. Therefore, we must strive to live a satisfying life with the right balance. Social media can either
change a person's life negatively and/or positively. Although it can help many people positively, it has
affected people negatively in many ways. The use of social media has been abused, but it is up to the
following generations to change that perspective
