The preferred endgame is an endemic, in which Covid-19 will not be entirely eliminated, but
its ability to overturn societies and livelihoods will be dramatically reduced. Shifting to a
‘booster’ approach to protecting core groups is the next step; in effect rolling COVID-19 into
the four ‘common cold’ Coronaviruses that historically infected humans and tackling every
one of its variants with amended vaccines, to keep a step ahead. While continued preparation
is needed, its sheer impact ought to be reduced overall. In effect, we need to knock the
‘novel’ out of COVID-19 and render it no longer new, both to our individual immune
systems, and our society (Placeholder1) (Estrada, Levasseur and Maxim). The shift from
the world have spent the better part of 2 years learning virus management protocols; now
however they need unlearn them to get beyond the paradigm. This means ‘unlearning a year
of messaging that said COVID-19 was not just a flu’, rebooting our trust in public health
policy, and coming to terms with the sheer implications of shifting from a pandemic to an

SARS-CoV-2 (a) is likely to ultimately become endemic and continue circulating among the
human population as a common cold virus. Indeed, several countries are already considering
implementing ‘living with COVID-19’ policies. However, the path to an endemic phase in
terms of its duration and public health impact is likely to be highly variable, depending on
multiple parameters such as vaccination rates, levels of immunity, transmission rates, and

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a strain of coronavirus that causes COVID-19
(coronavirus disease 2019), the respiratory illness responsible for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The virus previously
had a provisional name, 2019 novel coronavirus (2029-nCoV), and has also been called human coronavirus 2019 (HCoV-19
or hCoV-19).
